The existence of a fully functional building interior and associated utilities is probably irrelevant. This is a textbook prestige project for domestic consumption, because they're not fooling anyone outside NK with a 105-storey hotel.

We can always speculate as to what's really inside this building, but in the end it probably won't matter for the foreseeable future. That's why there is no need to evaluate this building here beyond its architecture and (hopefully) photo updates, because there isn't much else to evaluate.

The Romanized name of the building is Ryugyong Hotel, it's irrelevant whether the actual building is used as a hotel, a telecom tower, a warehouse or a missile launch pad. The official name of the building is difficult to dispute, regardless of what some people may think of the building itself or the country it's in. The official word is that it's "supposed" to be a hotel anyway, so no reason why the official name shouldn't use the word "hotel."

I think that should bring closure to this tangent. Back to the construction updates...I hope.

If the sky weren't so grey, the hotel would match it perfectly!

I would never have thought this building could look so darn cool.I haven't gone through the threads properly so don't know but does the top revolve or not?

That really starts to looks exciting. And I can only agree with those who say they never thought this building could look beautiful. It does!.. sort of. I wonder what the locals think of it. North Koreans are not exactly used to seeing modern glass-cladded skyscrapers. That will bring some new spirit into the skyline of Pyongyang.

Direct quote from a recent visitor to NK. If this hotel is empty, what would make a foreign company think they could invest millions in the Ryugyong and ever hope to see a return?
Because the construction is being done by Egypt's Orascom Telecom (not Orascom's construction or hotel and development arms) in return for 75% stake in exclusive mobile phone operations for the next four years in North Korea. The total term for the license is 25 years. Orascom is to invest US$400 million in infrastructure (don't know if the hotel is included in that infrastructure number). Orascom has money tied up elsewhere in North Korea: its Construction arm (since sold) invested 100+ million to upgrade a NK cement factory and also started up the country's second foreign invested bank.

The question mark is the 'in return for.' There are no documents online that say what exactly Orascom has to do to the Ryugyong Hotel in order to get the phone concessions.

In December of last year, "Orascom’s resident project manager, Mahmoud Fawzi, said his company at the very least hoped to redo the facade to make the building more attractive."

I heard years ago that the concrete was inferior and it was not stable yet like to see something has come from the huge pile of concrete....for a while I imagined plants growing at random as a modern day hanging gardens...but...see what happens here ?

That is pretty much what the North Korean regime has tried to do with Pyongyang, because it was largely destroyed during the Korean War and so could be completely replanned and rebuilt as a model socialist city. But most construction in North Korea seems to be crude and shoddy, and there isn't enough money to maintain buildings properly (aside from important landmarks, of course).

I think decent interior photos from throughout this building would be like the holy grail for skyscraper enthusiasts!
