The only interesting thing about the BBC article are the Orascom & Koryotours quotes as they are the only ones who knows what they are talking about. Other than that, it's the same old negative view towards North Korea with many speculations but hardly any facts.

The 48,000 figure was reached at the end of Q2. The 3G service started in december 2008 and is only available in Pyongyang at the moment. From 0 to 48,000 in just over 6 months in only one city in a 'impoverished nation' is not bad at all...

What are they thinking? That Orascom is some kind of charity organisation? Orascom wouldnt invest 400 million if they cant make a profit out of it.

Same thing for a investor from Singapore who opened a fast food restaurant in Pyongyang this year, which is a succes and the opening for a 2nd restaurant is planned for early 2010.

These facts are obviously showing that 1. The NKs are welcoming foreign investment (so they are not so isolated at all) 2. there is a market for activities like this (so their economy may be growing at a slow pace, but surely is not 'broken')

The plans are to build 100,000 new homes in Pyongyang before 2012. There is no way to mask that. And it may sound unbelievable, but who would have thought 2 years ago that the Ryogyong Hotel would ever be finished?

We will see. So far the hotel, the many new blue roofs that can be seen all around Pyongyang and the reconstructed Mansudae Street are for real...

You're right. I shouldn't have said that to a forum where everyone who reads my typing is on the internet. Which means they too are also wealthy enough to have it. The only people who read this in 'third world' as you put it are the "wealthy elite" who have cell phone and internet services.

I should have said "I spend more than $100 per month on my cell phone bills". That would have been more topical, since the tower is (right now) just a large cell phone antenna.

Back on topic (since your post had nothing to do with the construction of this building) It sounds like good news that once they finish the outside, SOMETHING will happen on the inside as well. Maybe clean up the mold from 16 years of weather exposure. I cannot imagine what it looks like on the inside!

16 years being built...in a country where most of the population suffers poverty and famine. It's shameful, but if it started being built...they should finish it.

Eventually the Ryugyong Hotel should get some sort of seismic retrofit to prevent structural damage in the slightest earthquake. I don't know if there have been any earthquakes in North Korea.
