Funny guy!

Seriously: I would guess the prices would be a little higher than the only current tourist hotels (Koryo hotel and the Yanggakdo hotel)

Do you think they will allow non-North Koreans to stay at this hotel?

Of course, they will, that's what this hotel was for...

So they only clad one side. Maybe they should rename it Potemkin Tower.

Looks like slow progress since the last shot from February. Still digging for more recent...

Hmm... Here are the reasons why.

1) They used to get a lot of funds when S.Korea was pouring their money on the North under the Sunshine Policy...Now that the policy has stopped, the construction of the tower has stopped again.

2) The UN sanctions are working. North Korea is out of money now and the hotel tower is not a priority for the coins they've got left. All of the coins left on Kim's pocket are going to feed his military (not the citizens) and further nuclear experiments.

3) The plan was only to clad one side of the building from the beginning. Of course there was no plan to make suites in the interior except a pent house ("new palace") for Kim Jung Ill.

Oh please - it's VERY well established that this is being funded from a private source, not the government. What you say is rubbish.

I find that hard to believe. What private investor would be imprudent enough to fund a hotel like that in this backwater, where it hasn't a chance of turning a respectable profit? It's got 'white elephant' written all over it. The only person insane enough to fund this is you know who.

Read the thread and stop speculating. It is funded by an Egyptian company in exchange for setting up a mobile phone network in the country.

In case people haven't seen it, Pyongyang has new google earth imagery... here is the Ryugyong.

Note that two sides can be seen partially clad (there are also some pictures way back in this thread where two sides can be seen partially clad, so the images could still be several months old).

Also note a mini-Ryugyong hotel being constructed here.

The building has 3 sides, not 2.

If you go to the flickr page of florian_grupp you can see the date when the picture was taken (october 10 2009). I found in an other album this picture http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1332/...ef833da976.jpg in which you can see the third side partialy claded. This last picture was taken at the same date that the others posted by desertpunk.

I was wondering if those shots were taken earlier. Thanks for digging deeper. I hope this stops the "on hold" talk, given that we don't have any way of knowing that.

What do you mean "digging deeper"? It's stated right here:

I'm not a troll (although there is no source that tells me that the construction is on hold), and you never know what's happening in N.Korea
so called, "the most closed and secret place in the world".

This is the most recent picture, taken on the 29th of April. It shows that cladding on the 3rd side has now started.
