It looks good from a distance but there are photos in this thread that give a more close up look and some things are in need of repair and maintenance. Also remember that this is the 'elite showcase' for North Korea.

Construction of Ryugyong Hotel stopped after the fall of Soviet Union because then it became pointless and a waste of money. Now that it's needed again, the construction has resumed. If North Korea had to impress its people - they wouldn't had left that concrete monster standing there for 16 years and cladded and finished it right anyway.

What, no Wikipedia link?

Anyway, a lot of the grand public spaces and buildings were obviously built to impress, otherwise, why bother? The hotel is such a huge project that it just may have been too daunting with all the other expenses. I don't know. I don't worry about it.

"If I invest in this - I'll gain this"... Meanwhile, in North Korea the talented architects and artisans are happy to do what they do best. But after the fall of the Soviet Union the Ryugyong Hotel was clearly a waste of both money and talent. Until now.

PS: If you would like to continue the conversation about North Korean architecture besides the Ryugyong - we can do it either here, or in the Skybar.

Check this out: lights can be seen on the Ryugyong Hotel during night time.

I guess that's why North Korea looks so dark in satellite images- there aren't any street lights at night.

What you see in the picture above is the only place(spot) shows light on the satellite images though. The entire country is covered with darkness at night.

Isn't that the case with most major cities worldwide?!

That's a good thing as far as I'm concerned. Tho' the Ryugyong Hotel will probably stay lit all the time.

Well since there's probably not a lot of traffic at night, street light is not needed anyway. Atleast they are not wasting "energy" on massive scale like most other cities in the world, so I don't see it as a negative thing. They have energy problems so it's good to see they are carefull with it.

Also good to see they are still working on the building, progress is being made!
