I've been scanning interestingly all the news on the recent events in North Korea, but annoyingly everyone repeats the same few videos and pictures and talks about nothing but bloody Kim Jong un. Which is fair enough, but North Korea showed many new weapon systems for the first time in the parade - lets get some discussion about that somehwere (Fortunately, the website 'arms control wonk' does provide.) Also no images of the Ryugyong, but I imagine it must have featured in the firework display if nothing else - it did last year after all.

But I thought I'd mention something that piqued my interest but literally no one else has mentioned - the extremely prominant position given to Chinese Politburo member Zhou Yongkang in all these events - far more than Kim Jong Un, seemingly more than Kim Jong il even. A couple of photos below from news agencies...

And goodness sake, listen to this:

Quote:
With top leader Kim Jong Il looking on, as many as 50,000 North Korean dancers, acrobats, soldiers and children taking part in the annual Arirang festival last night donned panda costumes and clashed cymbals.

The performers held up placards forming slogans in Chinese characters such as “without the Communist Party there would be no new China.” The phrase was also sung, in Chinese, to the tens of thousands of people gathered at Pyongyang’s May Day stadium.
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-1...yang-gala.html

So implications of Chinese style reforms to come? Just a vassal state sucking up to their protector? Flattery to get China to support the succession?

Add a few skyscrapers, clad some of its older buildings, modernize the city, free it's people, abolish the government and pyongyang can become amazing.

I actually really like the building. It dominates it's surroundings so much that it looks taller and more massive than it really is.

I would really like to see close ups of the base of the structure, cas' it seems nothing is being done with that...

My theory is that Orascom agreed to cover the tower, not the base. The DPKR (ooops I mean DPRK) can handle it.

Or it's not important, since the base is not visible on the set images(propaganda pix)...

Isn't it strange that we had really close up pictures of the base about 30 pages back, but now nothing.

If we strongly look at the recent photos, one or two cranes are visible, but the base seems as if it was in the same stage as "30 pages back"...

Looks just as good like that, more like the pyramids of Egypt! Even the dirt in front looks like a sand dune!

It looks much better with the glass installed.

Sittin' here thinking it would have fit in the Las Vegas skyline pretty well. They need to build some talls around it, so it doesn't look so lonely.
