NEW YORK | 839 Sixth Avenue | 187m | 54 fl | T/O
![]() 14-MAY-07 J. D. Carlisle Development Corporation is erecting a 44-story mixed-use tower at 839 Avenue of the Americas between 29th and 30th Streets. The project will have a 250-room hotel operated by the Fitzpatrick Hotel Group and 320 residential condominium apartments. Perkins Eastman is the architectural firm for the development. The hotel will occupy the first 8 floors and long-term-stay units will occupy floors 9 through 13. The residential condominiums will occupy floors 16 through 44. The project is seeking a special permit for an underground garage and the local community board recommended approval March 8, 2007 and the Borough President recommended approval April 5, 2007. It is also seeking permission for a plaza with an open air cafe and the community board issued a favorable recommendation February 8, 2007. A rendering of the building indicates that the hotel portion of the project will be clad in a bronze-colored glass and the condo section of the tower will be clad in a clear glass. The tower will be distinguished by two vertical "fins" in the middle of its north and south faces. The site was formerly occupied by a parking garage and two-story store buildings. Perkins Eastman's other recent projects include the Cielo tower on the southwest corner of 83rd Street at York Avenue, and the Centria at 14 West 48th Street, both for J. D. Carlisle, and the Jade at 16 West 19th Street. The project is expected to be completed in 2009. Copyright © 1994-2007 CITY REALTY.

In my city, we would have a thread for a tower of this size from the first concept because it would be the tallest in town.
In NY, we see it when it is already well under construction. I guess this one is not even remotely as interesting as all the other, far bigger projects and it is simply overlooked.

This tower will look great in NYC. It's design reminds me of two bookends. Great tower, will certainly fit in with NYC's wave of slim blue glass towers.

hm...i can't say im a fan. To me, the facade just doesn't do it. I dislike towers with more than one facade (typically, i mean there are lots of exceptions for me) and neither facade on this tower is attractive. I don't like its proximity to the ESB either. Maybe ill change my mind but i doubt it. This tower is just not for me

Great! Another discreet but slender and elegant tower quietly doing its thing and improving the skyline. Love it! Only in NY!

I have to say that I don't think this tower should have been built. While you may say "another skyscraper for NY, great!" , it is really a loss for the neighborhood. The garment district and 6th avenue used to be lined with old commercial buildings that could have (and the remain ones still can) be renovated. Beautiful limestone storefronts have been torn down so cheesy condos can been built. Look at the above pics of the base and tell me you would rather have that than century old historic beauties. The garment district should be preserved.

Yeah, and I can't that the buildings that are being replaced by the other two towers were anything special anyway... I'm mean come on, those buildings had nothing historic about them.
On this building itself, I can't say I really like it either. The first 8-10 floors look so out of place with the rest of the tower. |

I wasn't saying this tower in particular, I was reffering to the ugly rental towers that line 6th avenue, and the low, nicer buildings that could have been pleasant with a renovation. Last time I was there, which was today, the garment distract stretches from 23rd to 34th from 7th to 5th roughly.
