The construction base of the VHK consortium sub-contracted by Punj Lloyd to complete TCRIP is getting ready at Anamugham on the Bypass.

The erection of the massive hot mix plant is nearing completion, the concrete batching plant is already operational.

Work is now all set to pick up pace as the consortium's heavy machinery arrives. And soon our Volvos will have a lot more world-class roads to zip over.

The project components look impressive, rather than just restricting the scope as an Amusement Park. I’m pretty sure that there will be many takers for this project considering the location advantages – a stone throw away distance from one of the most beautiful waterfronts in the state - that too beach and Lake….!!!

I saw the EOI invitation in today’s Economic Times….

This entertainment complex along with the International Convention center (by Raheja group) , Games village and habitat center and several residential projects in the pipeline by private builders along the Akkulam waterfront will surely transform the Akkulam skyline beyond recognition and also catapult TVM into the big league as a prime tourism destination .

Yeap, actions are better than words and even better than pictures. So rather than yacking about or clicking pics of the new darlings of the capital city, the Volvo 8400s, yours truely took a few rides on them to see how right the supporters and cynics are.

Here are some of the pictures of the trips taken from Kumarapuram to Technopark and back on Volvos, JNT 1 and JNT 2.

Leaving Kumarapuram at 1341 Hrs on JNT 1; bus is about 60% full even at this off-peak time.

The staff are very polite and helpful; professional. The conductor comes to the passengers with his ETM.

JNT 1 turns into India's largest IT park, getting looks not just from the techies but even from foreign personnel.

Zooming through the gate, the Volvo leaves all others in its wake. Meanwhile, a Technopark security guard has boarded to ensure that no unauthorised personnel alight within the campus.

I think this load factor is more than enough for the services to break even. To add on to this, here is another personal update from one of our forumers here, frmneo999 (Srijithv) from Twitter.

I think the initiative taken by the techies to make full use of the bus will be a big boost for the services. The only drawback I read was the timings are still haywire but naturally it will take a few days for the schedule to fall in place. So, so far so good.

- Thanks, Scorpio. I spoke to the conductors of the buses in some detail. According to them, the timings can be frozen only when the frequencies increase with more buses. With just 4 buses running on this route, the interval between buses is about 45 minutes, which means the possibility for major variations in ETA is significant. Once the interval comes down to about 20 minutes or so, the timings will be much more accurate, which will help people plan better and increase ridership even further.

Techies launch e-campaign for low-floor buses

The luxury buses launched jointly by the KSRTC and the LSG Department have already got fans from among the techies.

Software professionals in Technopark who have been struggling to find a parking lot inside the campus have come forward to promote the new bus service that connects Technopark with other major points in the city.

Techies argue that the ride in Volvo buses will also be cheaper than their company transport. Most companies charge around Rs 1,000 monthly as transportation cost. The Volvo costs you Rs 18 for a trip to Ulloor. 18 x 22 (working days) x 2 (trips daily) = Rs 792 a month. That is, it’s better than any contracted transport, and you can choose your own timing, and you pay-per-use only!.

CM inaugurated the Visitors Help Centre @ The Secretariat

Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan inaugurated the Visitors Help Centre at the Secretariat.

The Help Centre functions at the South Gate and the Cantonment Gate initially; more help centres will be added soon.

Visitors have to first come to these help centres to get directions on their purpose of visit and will be issued passes.

Volvos are to increase its occupancy with time..Just for a instance we had our Janshatabdi running on losses and hardly found occupancy at time of its initial service..At a point of time it was also heard to be withdrawn from service due this poor passenger turnout..
and ..Everyone one knows what the situation is at present, need reservation atleast days prior to get sure seat..and it got extended to Calicut for its very same image..
This will change for sure..needs people to get adjusted..just that time lag..
Trivandrum will have more Volvos ...thats for sure..

It was mainly because of a stupid system of 'booking' tickets. You had to 'Reserve' like any long distance train and tickets were not able to be bought from stations on the last minute. That accounted for the poor patronage of Jan Shatabdi in the beginning, passengers were stranded in the platform while the train ran empty.

Meanwhile even if the Volvos run full, there is no guarantee that it will bring profits, since the maintenance and other running costs are higher. In Bangalore, volvos are yet to make any 'operational' profit (As on date more than 500 numbers are on the roads).

These bus services should be seen more as a 'Public Service System' . We have very few public transport undertakings in India which are in profits. DTC (Delhi) and BEST (Mumbai) are in red for decades even without running the costly volvos. Only exception is BMTC (Bangalore) and Karnataka SRTC. Main reason being the fact that BMTC is much professional in approach and recruits MBA grads for the management functions.
