The land is very much there, I had scouted it for a project of our own. It is bang opposite Kedaram and currently has a single entrance gate, I suspect the same will be widened when this project comes up.

If this is the location, I belive it shall have access from the LIC lane and the road near MG College through the Lakshmi Nagar.

Kalyan Jewellers is shortly opening in East Fort, claiming it to be the biggest jewellery showroom in the city. The area is experiencing massive growth in the retail sector, this new outlet is just around the corner from the showrooms of Prince Jewellery, Josco, Alukkas, Allapatt, Chemmanur and Khazana Gold.

Avenue trees fringing stadium gone

To widen the road to six lanes under the City Road Improvement Project

LESS GREEN COVER: Avenue trees around the University Stadium in the city, on Sunday, made way for widening the road.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Avenue trees bordering the University Stadium were felled on Sunday for widening the road connecting PMG junction to the LMS junction to six lanes.

More than 10 trees will be cut down for the work under the City Road Improvement Project (CRIP).

The new road will have an 18-metre-wide carriageway, besides a 2-metre-wide footpath on either side.

Land of widths between 2 m and 4 m will be taken over on either side for the widening work.

“The distance from the avenue trees to the reconstructed boundary wall of the stadium is around 4 m. We had tried to retain the trees and see if traffic could be allowed between the trees and the new footpath. However, we found that it will be dangerous both for the motorists and the pedestrians using the footpath. So, there was no option but to fell the trees,” said an official of Thiruvananthapuram Road Development Company Ltd. (TRDCL), a private consortium implementing the project.

Authorities are planning to introduce two-way traffic along the stretch. In the first phase, two-way traffic will be introduced from VJT Hall to the War Memorial in early January.

City Police Commissioner Revada Chandrashekhar conducted a joint inspection of the stretch with road development authorities the other day, ahead of the introduction of the two-way traffic.
Eventhough I am sorry for the trees, it is neverlheless a good thing to have the trees pave the way for widening the road which will benefit the public since the traffic is high volume there and many important institutions are there including the Legistative complex. The only thing we can do is to plant more trees which will ultimately benefit the future generations.

I heard from my relative that the trees which were inside the University campus are gone and are now the part of the side walk in the road. Could anyone post the photo giving the view of the road showing the trees.
Thanks in advance
Cheer!!!

Kalyansilks + Jayalakshmisilks + Emmanualsilks along with the existing majors like Aiyappas,Parthas etc. This will transform TVM into major centre of apparel trade.

We need to think about the transplantation of trees in our country too. We the Professional Landcsapers of the Middle East very successfully transplant thousands of trees & palms every year. Our policy of "fell & sell" should be stopped.

Vijayakumar plea to Union Ministers on HC Bench

Source: expressbuzz.com
Quote:

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Law Minister M.Vijayakumar has urged the Union Ministers from the State to take the initiative for favourable decisions in the case of establishing a High Court Bench in Thiruvananthapuram and the proposed Kochi metro project at the next meeting of the Union Cabinet. He had sent letters to the Prime Minister and the Union Ministers from the State in this regard. He said that even though both the ruling and opposition parties had unanimously forwarded the demands of the State before the Prime Minister, the Centre was ignoring the State.
Cheers!!!

Shopping spree...!

The reason for so many retailers flocking to Trivandrum is pretty clear, the performance of retail in the city.....

In the middle of the recession, Trivandrum continues to shop away into bliss, bucking the trend seen elsewhere.

Shopping fete: southern districts top sales

Special Correspondent

Thiruvananthapuram: Southern districts of the State — Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Alappuzha —have topped the Grand Kerala Shopping Festival sales, accounting for the distribution of 4.5 lakh coupons at the end of the fourth week of the fete.

In a statement , the Tourism Department, organisers of the festival, said Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad, which come under central zone, came second with north zone comprising Kasaragod, Kannur, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad coming third.

Thiruvananthapuram accounted for the highest sales among the four districts in the south zone, while Thrissur and Kannur topped the central and north zones respectively.

This may come as a sharp reminder of reality to many, but retail activity in the State is being led by Trivandrum.

And we are spending on books as well....

Two lakh people visit book fest

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The second Thiruvananthapuram Book Fest concluded here on Sunday with a book publishers’ conference.

A statement released by the organiser, the Kerala State Institute of Children’s Literature, said the festival had two lakh visitors and books estimated at Rs.1.5 crore were sold. More than 50 books were released.

Two national seminars were conducted, besides a series of lectures by eminent personalities in the literary and publishing fields.

200,000 people in just 5 days! And this comes close on the heels of the DC International Book Fest, which saw even greater numbers.

Intellectual capital and education speak for themselves.

I think the greenery and blooms are back, with Perfect Agri Management Corporation, a TVM based landscaping company given the contract of lansdcaping and maintenance by TRDCL. I had seen the Kowdiar roads back in glory during my last visit.

Road widening along the LMS- Fine Arts College stretch. Thanks to Praveen for the image...You may also want to read his account of the ongoing development process.

The new boundary wall of the University Stadium looks cool alright, but I'm not sure if I'm happy or sad, overall... Well, we may always have to lose something to gain another.

National Games 2010

Main venue with 50, 000 capacity would probably come up in Karyavattam. The proposed site at Vattiyoorkavu deemed unsuitable to fit the purpose.

This would probably be what the doctor ordered for the city. Kazhakkuttam, as a rapidly evolving satellite of Trivandrum is a fitting enough location to host the big sporting event.

Scorpiogenius, I am disappointed to say there are rumours around that a opposition MLA is pulling strings for the stadium to his constituency.

Personally I feel stadium should remain at Vattiyoorkavu as announced by the sports minister. Surely, he would have seen many positive factors in announcing the location. Any change in location at a later stage is bound to invite criticism and may also set a bad precedence in future. The polytechnic ground is one of the best locations available within city limits compared to LNCPE which is officially outside city limits.

The present biggest stadium in the state i.e. the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium is located at Kaloor, well within Ernakulam city limits.

And there is enough govt. land around polytechnic grounds- staff quarters, nirmithi kendra, peroorkada village office etc. that are small structures that may be removed for the stadium and relocated. Private property, if any, that needs to be aquired may only be a minimum. Considering that the land around Polytechnic is within city limits, one cannot expect 100's of acres but only land enough for a big stadium.

At Polytechnic grounds, I can imagine a stadium with maximum land utilised for the tracks, ground and seating; remaining minimal land used for multi level car parking & shopping complex outside on either side of the ground.

The biggest advantage of Polytechnic grounds is that there are two main approach roads from either side. One is the Vattiyoorkavu Aruvikkara main road and the other being the Vattiyoorkavu- Peroorkada proposed ring road.

As for the high voltage line, yes it is there passing to ISRO installed at a large height above ground level . Though I didnot quite understand why it is an issue for an open stadium.

Let us wait for the report. I only hope the government sticks to the announced location unless otherwise there are convincing reasons.

Are trivandrum property prices effected

Frens,

Are trivandrum property prices effected by the economic downturn. Read an article today in rediff regarding falling property places, low demand and low rental yield. The article has a table with square feet rates correction, which happened in few metros.
http://specials.rediff.com/money/200...ll-further.htm

What is the scenario in trivandrum.

Well, the average property prices in TVM is below Rs2000, and the table indicates the drop in prices for average locations (price of 3000 and below)in such big cities is less than 2%. I don't think TVM will be affected since demand is much more than the availability. The newest project Marutham Gateway at Pettah sells at Rs3200/sqft and is almost sold out according to the builder!!
