As far as I know, Solaris was founded as Neoplan of Polen and later sold to a Polish investor.

No a polish buisnessman Christopher Oszewski created a polish part of Neoplan, concern named Neoplan-Polska. It produced in Bolechowo Neoplan buses for Warsaw, Poznań, Kraków etc.
In 2001 Neoplan-Polska was renamed as Solaris Bus & Coach, and started with Solaris Urbino citybus. The first generation was only a "new skin" for old Neoplans' buses, the second generation which has got pretty much same body as the old one is a new bus. Of course now we have the third generation which is a completely new design.

I suspect they may have been inspired by one of my old designs I showed them in Roma, following a contest... (look at animation pictures)

Thanks Filip. I heard these late generation buses had been designed by a German design studio, is this true ?

Nice. In the drawings, the windshield is not curved like in the real buses.

Designed in the sense of "the look". The actual mechanical design was not outsourced.

<my opinion> The look in Solaris is imho its weakest part. It looks a bit "forced modern", but this is my opinion. I guess this is a good move, since the product is aimed at German and Swiss market</my opinion>

As for the nationality of the bus, it's like many of us, European mutt: body made in Poland, engines German/Danish (or maybe also Polish? made by MAN, AFAIRC); gearbox, air conditioning etc. are German, window seals and chassis protection Swedish etc.

So, they are as Polish as Opel Agila and Volksvagen Transporter

Ah, would have forgotten. This company has one very, very Easter European thing you won't find in Germany or France:

it's run by a woman.

Outsourcing is very popular nowadays You should know that only 40% of the whole production process is held in Germany, the rest of the components used by Mercedes is produced in other countries, by different manufacturers But there is no doubt that Mercedes is a German company.

Wikipedia says:
"It is a family-owned business, with Krzysztof Olszewski as chairman and his wife Solange as deputy chairman responsible for contacts with clients."
