Time for Ireland to accept gay marriages
Almost all of Europe has some form of gay marriage or registered cohabitation rights, except for the most backwards places still believing in some kind of religious fairytales. Is it not time for Ireland to join with the Netherlands rather than be in the same category as Russia?

The legislation is being processed! It's being processed for civil unions anyway.

The denial of anyones rights based on something as trivial as sexual orientation is archaic.
Equal rights for all citizens. Simple as that. |

Last post before xmas. Just google searched it. Most recent poll showed 84% in favour of either gay marriage or civil partnership. While the most recent RTE poll showed over 3/4 in favour of full gay marriage. To my surprise, we're even more liberal than the general public on SSC.

I was watching a documentry by Louis theroux called "the most hated family in America" And Basically Its a church which mostly revolves around hating homosexuality. They hate Numerous countrys and everything in them if there is a law or somthing that protects gay rights and one of the blacklisted countrys is Ireland. Heres the link...http://www.godhatesireland.com/

I support the right for gay marriage 100%, however the wording of this poll is ridiculous.
Option 1 is put diplomatically, and has no reference to the crux of the thread. Option 2 may as well be stated something like "Do you enjoy a good lynchin' for all them weirdos?" |

Yes, I agree. The phrasing, langauge and choice of words in both the poll question and the op is quite absurd. However, it is an interesting topic for discussion nonetheless.
Plus, thank god the 'westbrough'? church hates Ireland. Can't think of a better accolade for a country to have! |

The question is a bit loaded but i would say thats a fair description of the majority of people who would vote no.
I dont really understand why this is still a controversial issue in any self respecting liberal western nation tbh. Its a simple matter of love v. hate. |

The civil partnership bill should have been well in at this stage. I don't understand the delay with this. Instead we have the ridiculous situation where gay people in committed relationships and other cohabitting couples have no legal recognition in this country. Hardly the sign of a modern progressive society. I really wish that the government would get a move on in relation to this.

voted no, as an answer to the thread title, certainly from an Northern Ireland point of view, as it is on the geographical island of Ireland. Did not vote no to the actual polling questions which appears to be of no relevance whatsoever to the thread title. Time for Ireland (both parts) to accept gay marriages - answer NO (N.Ireland) - reason for voting no.

marriage = no
civil union = yes im not the religious type but forcing churches to embrace gay marriage when it goes against their rights as well is not right. Whats wrong civil unions? |

I think everyone is agreed that the question is exceptionally flawed, but I think one should discern a yes/no response rather than taking the ridiculous questioning at face value.
Interesting to note that if it had been an exclusively Republic of Ireland vote Yes would have it at 100% and no would be 0%. Lostboy, it appears you're preaching to the liberally converted and need to do some work closer to home! |

And ironic that the right for civil partnership exists in NI and not in the South. "Do you think that its time for your creator to adopt His creations ways and accept what we say, in that He is, and always was wrong. Basically God has somehow got it all wrong and that man who He made is right. Hmmm!!! interesting. So man is wiser than God - dangerous ground to tread if you think like this" Religions have always followed the moral zeitgeist eventually, thankfully. |

I would actually say NI is probrably more intolerant on these issues still then the Republic despite what legal technicalities there may be. This is probrably due to the religious devide and the fact each side is more religious in general then their friends in GB or ROI IMO.
