Lol, Mateusz. You can post your future plan for Latvian motorways.

Thanks all!

Yes, when Jelgava-Riga highway reconstruction into a motorway will start, which won't be very soon.

A8/E77 Riga bypass - Ozolnieki

The same route only in Jelgava direction.

Approaching A5/A8 junction.

Turn to Riga, it's a cloverleaf junction, btw. Asphalt repairing started on A5.

A8 highway to Riga.

We turn right, obviously.

Joined A8 to Jelgava.

Turn to Olaine, again.

RV with a German license plate.

Entering Jelgava region.

1+2

This turn is closed due to bridge renovation over Iecava river.

Distance sign.

Unfinished.

Again unfinished.

Were turning right.

To be continued...

You have lots of signs for Tallina (Tallinn) in Centre Latvia :O, we have signs for Riia (Riga) only in Tallinn, Pärnu, Tartu and Valga I believe.

P100 Ozolnieki - Jelgava

I wan't to show you a great NE entrance to Jelgava driving through a small town called Ozolnieki.

Ok, so this is where we left. We are turning right.

On the road to Ozolnieki. This road does not have a number.

Approaching a railway crossing.

Jelgava - Riga electrified rail connection.

Entering Ozolnieki town.

Crossing with P100, Jelgava left, Riga right, but now there's a dead end.

See?

Town ends and untill Jelgava only 2km.

Welcome to fabulous Jelgava.

Very green and very smooth road.

Entering Jelgava.

Trucks have a prohibit to drive through Jelgavas centrum.

Crossing with Loka Maģistrāle (Arc Magistrale), it does have this name because this road is a part of a planned northern bypass of Jelgava, which hasn't been realized yet, cause it lack's a bridge over river Lielupe.

RAF living massif, or should I say - my home.

PS: Please comment, so we can move to the next page, if you don't want to kill your browser with the upcoming pictures.

P100, is that a leftover from Soviet times? I thought the P-roads where actually russian Р's, which are translated as "R". (regional?).

No, actually. As Latvia became an independent country, new changes were made in the laws. Those old regional roads were changed into P-roads and "P" counts as "Pirmās šķiras autoceļš" - 1st class road. As of 1st July, 2009, P-roads will be reclassified as regional roads again. And 2nd class roads as - local roads.

Great photos, Ripley! I like all those pedestrian crossings (we don't have them here), and that's a really nice entrance into Jelgava. I like your spacious, comfortable roads. One more post to the next page, btw.

EDIT: oops, too late.

Thanks Verso!

A5 - Riga bypass

Rigas bypass consists of two roads - Baltezers - Saulkalne (A4) and Salaspils - Babīte (A5). Rigas bypass total length - 60.7 km, respectively 20.4 km - A4 and 40.3 km - A5. I drove 22 km yesterday on A5. Rigas bypass has on of the highest AADT records in Latvia.

This is where we left. We turn right.

Repairing asphalt.

New layer.

Crossing.

Old layer.

Approaching an important roundabout. Second biggest city in Lithuania signed - Kaunas.

Mistake, were not on E67 yet.

A5 crossing with A7/E67 - "Via Baltica".

Kaunas - 242 km.

"Via Baltica" starts here with a short 2+2 section.

We exit here.

Second roundabout follows. Jaunjelgava (Newjelgava) signed.

We turn here.

Approaching Rigas hydroelectric power plant, generating - 402 MW. It's the second most powerful plant after Pļaviņu HPP which generates - 868,5 MW.
Road quality is devastating here.

Reservoir.

The plant ahead.

Populated place near the plant.

Rīgas HES.

On the dam.

Riga skyline from the dam.

A5 ends at this roundabout.

To be continued...

Good to see some police around. Drunk driving (DUI) is still a major problem in the Baltics and other Central European countries, and getting them off the road should be the highest priority of the police. You can only achieve that by patrolling the roads extensively.

The best would be to make a DUI socially unacceptable, for instance, in the Netherlands, driving with alcohol is not really socially accepted, when compared to Belgium, where traffic fatalities are twice as high as the Netherlands.

Poland: 38 million inhabitants => 5700 traffic fatalities
Netherlands: 16 million inhabitants => 700 traffic fatalities

When compared to the amount of travelled kilometers, it's probably even worse.

A6 entrance to Riga, Slāvu fly-over and Southern bridge

We continue our journey to Riga. Approuching this roundabout, which was built in 2007.

Turn to A6/E22/E67 to Tallinn and second biggest city in Latvia - Daugavpils with 115,000 inhabitants.

We turn here.

A6 to Daugavpils and this 2+2 part of A6 ends in Ogre town. This road is also called the Moscow road and Moscow is signed 143km away from here in Jēkabpils town.

Joined A6 to Riga and Riga starts at this overpass, we sign distances from city center to center, so 17 km till Rigas centrum.

First light stop.

Road art.

We turn right, to avoid jams near the bridge site.

Slāvu fly-over yesterday.

Men working hard.

Speed limit 70 km/h.

I love our signage.

800m long bridge over Daugava river.

Riga skyline.

Bridge ends.

Construction of the 3rd stage started some weeks ago and still no activities.

We turn left.

Silence.

This is my last photo part. South entrance to Riga.

We turn left.

2 laned road will lead us till A7.

Crossing with A7.

We turn left.

Were on A7 now.

We are entering Ķekava town.

Bridge over Ķekaviņa river.

A church.

After Ķekava. Blurry.

Two pics of A5 driving back home. The same cops on the left.

That's it, for now. I really hope you liked it!

^ Something went wrong last year, it was planned to start repairing that section in July and finish it in August. All they did, just installed new crashbarriers.
