A5 Imanta (Riga) - A8 junction

Yesterday I drove 22 km on the remaining A5 part which I haven't photographed yet. From Imanta, a highrise district in Riga, until junction with A8.

Turning right for A5.

Riga ends.

Motion blur is on!

Babīte, this where A5 starts.

The only 2+2 section on A5 starts.

Babīte ends.

Distance sign.

Tight curve.

Riga-Jūrmala railway.

Approaching junction with A10.

Temporary roundabout.

Exit to A10.

Overpass renovation. Bridge design is similiar as the one over A2.

6 laned highway (it should get a motorway status) with the highest speed limit in Latvia - 100 km/h, to Jūrmala.

Another temporary roundabout.

Distance sign.

Approaching junction with A9 to Liepāja.

New pavement needed.

2+2 ends.

2 level junction with a local road.

Driving over old 2-laned Riga-Jelgava road and Riga-Jelgava railway.

A8 direction to Jelgava.

Not so bad, lovely pictures. I just think it's a bit weird to sign Tallinn so early and leave out Ventspils, Liepāja, Jelgava, Bauska/LT, Daugavpils and Sigulda/Pskov, which all exit sooner. Btw, why is Salaspils so important?

As always, Ripley, nice report!! What I don't like in A5 is that it ends in nowhere! Why can't they finally continue the highway so that to make a real city circle road?!

^ Forgot the situation in the country?! There is no money to continue the highway.

Maybe because A5 ends there.

Oh, I didn't notice that. Why doesn't A5 continue as the bypass instead of A4?

I don't know why, but I agree with you, it would be more logical if the whole bypass is A5.

The whole bypass could be renamed only after there will be built a bridge over Riga reservoir and a new highway with bridge from Babīte till Vecmīlgrāvis and further!

Piejūras maģistrāle? I doubt that that's going to realized. With the Northern crossing it would be enough.

Of course it will be realized in future. It's in Riga developments plans since 80ties.

Does it include regular at-grade highways or only motorway-like roads?

^ Motorway-like roads.

Here is a very interesting and old map, motorways planned until 2025:

Purple: until 2013
Red: until 2025

Sorry, there isn't a bigger size

Is a motorway neccessery for example to Liapaja or Ventspils direction? What are traffic volumes there ? And it's strange to see Via Baltica to Tallin direction not being motorway in projects.

Routes you wrote don't need motorways, because traffic intensity on those roads are low and that would be a waste of money, as for the rest, it's ok.

It would be great if in the plans was a motorway from LT/LV border Medumi - Daugavpils - Rēzekne - LV/RUS border Grebņeva, a lot of trucks use this route for transit.

I made a map of where we do need motorways:
Blue: 3+3 motorways
Red: 2+2 motorways

On what do you base this? Judging from current traffic volumes your map doesn't make much sense (especially on A13 Lithuania-Rēzekne-Russia).
3x3 all the way to Jelgava and Skulte but not to much more congested Ogre or Sigulda directions? Is that because you live there?

The motorway we could be sure about its realization is the one from Riga till LV/RUS border (Zilupe). On 29th of July there will be a meeting of Latvian-Russian intergovernmental commission, during which a proposal of new highway (Riga-Ergli-border) will be discussed. The entire project is estimated at 170 million lats (300 million euros).

Look at laughable small traffic volume near Russian border Terehova and Grebņeva border points. Does we really need motorway to Russia in next 15-20 years, I doubt that. Besides there are always foreign politics, no Latvian politician will approve building multimillion Moscow motorway before we have decent connection with central/western Europe.

I know that A13 has low traffic, as I said, mostly trucks use this road for transit to Russia and truckers drive through Latvia instead of Belarus, so we have a priority. Why? Why don't we use this great change to build a motorways that would boost our economy?! We must make our land attractive for investors. Especially in Latgale! The region that lives in a diferent world.

PS: welcome to the forums, Burtinsh!
