24.01.2010.

Slāvu bridge being demolished. Despite the low temperatures, works are going very fast.

New bridge parts.

I think, that they will be started this year, because they are very short road sections.. But maybe I'm wrong..

Yep, don't even dream about motorways/expressways, all what is being done is just very good quality repavement! Though, good news anyway, seems we'll be getting some great connections with all the main Latvian cities in few years time!

A2 Riga-Sēnite contract will be signed in the first half of 2011, not as it was planned this summer. So how many times can it be delayed? It's really annoying, I was hoping for works to start this year.

Sounds like our motorway project Kaunas-Marijampolė stretch on A5 is getting neck a neck with your A2 expressway project. Both are important and both will wait "better times" a bit.

Hi dear Latvian road fans.

Me and another SSC frorumer (bleetz) are thinking of doing a little one day road trip from Vilnius to Sigulda. We're also thinking that we'll take different roads for going there and coming back.

Vilnius-Sigulda should look like this (i.e. a default Google maps or satnav route, nothing unusual I guess): http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sour...,11.634521&z=7

The more interesting part, however, should be the coming back route. For now I had an idea of coming back via Daugavpils. Perhaps something like this (just a draft, certainly not final in Latvian territory): http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sour...,11.634521&z=7

Could I get any good suggestions of which road to take? We won't be able to stop much on the way (we'll do everything in one day, so obviously we won't have time for that) but a more picturesque road would be an advantage as so would be some interesting road objects (bridges, viaducts, etc.). All photos and comments, of course, will be posted here.

So here we talk more about your way back.
Your selected route is picturesque. Road from Sigulda to Kegums is fairly good and devoid of cars, some parts have been recently renovated. Landscape is rather fine, silent, typical rural landscape. Road along Daugava to Daugavpils is picturesque in many places, but the road itself is rather congested, with many smaller towns along the route. Daugavpils - Zarasai is picturesque with untypical landscape for Latvia IMHO.

I would propose this route - through Cesis, Vecpiebalga and Madona. The same kilometres, but faster and a lot more picturesque:

On your way you will cross Vidzeme highlands, there is beautiful landscape.

Thanks, Gatis. This way we may see both A6 and some other roads. Perhaps not too bad for one day

Actually we may as well take this road on our way to Sigulda and come back via A7 instead... just to make sure we see the better part while it's still not dark.

Yes, that would be wise, better take it while you are not that tired and are ready to look around.

I got bad news - The Southern bridge 3rd stage construction works can be stopped, because of the low funding..

P.S. Sorry about my english.

Yep, unfortunately that's possible if the goverment wouldn't allocate the needed financing.. Same can occur Eastern Magistral Gaujas street crossing fly-over..
