Nice. This road seems to be in significant better condition that I thought it would be. Somehow I thought the pavement was like A6 near Daugavpils, but I was clearly wrong

I have travelled on this road a few times. All being during the period of 2002-2004. It used to be a nice road back then as well. Thanks for the pictures.

A question. Are there any plans to make Riga-Jelgava completely grade-separated? It shouldn't even cost too much I guess.

^ Sure, but the works won't start sooner than 2013, probably.. And, still, it wouldn't get a motorway status, just an expressway afaik.

As long as it increases the speed, safety and comfort of drive, it's all what's needed.

A8 Riga-Jelgava after reconstruction in 2016 is going to have a motorway status with a 130 km/h speed limit. How many times must I repeat myself?

Reconstruction will start in 2016. The end of it - 2020.

Hmm, so whom should we believe? Due to the crisis this construction might be postponed for more than expected..

Which project is that? Is that an extension of the Slavu fly-over expressway on the eastern side of Riga to A2?

It is a part of Eastern magistral in Riga.
You can see a map here:
The part in the yellow circle can be seen in the pictures.

That's Eastern highway. The phase circled in yellow is the object:

It's U/C now, but as a simple 2+2 road.

Update 12.05.2010

Daugavpils transporta mezgls. Photos from panoramio by user alinco_fan.

What about making longer 2*2 scretch it is almost built, just no pavement, land and bridges finished.

At some sections Riga - Jelgava has awful pavement, much worse than Riga-Jekabpils has at worst places.

By law (Regulation (EC) No 562/2006), there are no border controls. However, the latvian border police (who, by law, are only allowed to work the borders with Russia and Belarus) routinely violate the law and stop motorists entering Latvia from Estonia and Lithuania to illegally check their passports.

/\ Yes, that is true. You get checked by Latvians on their border every single time you cross it (at least on the Latvian-Lithuanian border). By contrast, I have never been checked on the Polish-Lithuanian border, even though I cross it quite often. The Latvians should really sort themselves out on this one.

bleetz, the latvian border police who stopped you were breaking the law. From this url you can download the law in latvian and keep it in your car.

Great updates from Daugavpils!

About those passport checks - I've been checked both on Estonian and Lithuanian borders. So, that's not that bad IMO because somehow this procedure helps to control the incomming flow, and this might reduce some illegal stuff transit!
