Nice to see gravel reginal roads being turned into asphalt ones, but still they could've made it times less steep than it used to be when it was an unnecessary local road, but as it will be turned into paved road, its popularity should rise, but still it wouldn't be possible to drive quite fast and with big comfort..

This road was the main connection between Riga and Moscow in the 60's.

Yes, the M9. It had "Automagistral" status, the highest back then. While A-215 (current A6) had all-union highway status. It's hard to believe that this gravel road was one of the important ones, even in maps it was more highlighted than A6, which was the same as it is now.

Yes, here are two of them (I apologize for the bad quality, because I took this with my camera).
1. This is the whole route from 1994 map. Don't pay attention to green and light red lines, I drew that when I was a kid.

2. Riga's bypass scheme from the 80's.

What I dislike in Soviet planning is the short-term planning strategy, I mean just look at Riga Bypass, which hasn't changed since then, no new extension roads and bridges, hardly this can handle transit flow because it's too displaced and lacks at least a third part, as well as Nortern Corridor wouldn't actually replace missing circumferential part for having a complete round city bypass..

You have a town called Ragana? It means "a witch" in Lithuanian.

^ Yep, really odd situation, considering its former status of Automagistral it looks so silly.. But some rural cast-off roads were paved completely.. By then, they thought mostly about the volumes of works, not much of their future necessities..

Road paving here in Latvia happened en masse in middle 1980ies only.
When I was little kid (mid 1970ies), most of road between Riga and Liepaja was unpaved and dusty as hell.

Interesting. Can you give google earth or zl.lv kartes coordinates for this place?

Sorry, no can do. I'm not familiar with that area. I guess this bridge is new. It's hard to judge what's it for, is it a overpass over the new E22 route? Or is the new E22 route viaduct over nothing?

Construction of the last E22 route phase has started this week, from Tīnūži till P32 crossing, I made a map of all phases matched together and added construction time dates. See below:

That's great!
By the way, some time ago there was a problem with this E22 project (purple zone in your map). One of possible builder's offer was refused and he sent a complaint to IUB. Is everything ok with it now?

Good to see that at least they constantly proceed with whole project implementation, despite any problems with financing they don't even leg behind the schedule. I wish there were more such co-operational sites with foreign interests in them (like Russian in this case)!
