Good news, the awful bridge over Salaca on A1 has been repaved.

I saw that bridge on TV news. Some kind of fool from Salacgrīva municipality blamed everyone in bridge's condition.
Of course, he didn't mention that he and his people have done nothing to improve it's condition. Other municipalities try to gain EU money (and many of them are lucky to get it) but these ones haven't even tried to do it. I'm almost sure that Salacgrīva could get such money, because this bridge is a part of important A1 route.

I hope that a four lane highway between Riga and Bauske will take a much more direct route than the current A7 and stay well west of Kekava and Ieceva.

The route will stay as it already is. Ķekava will get a Western bypass, Iecava and Bauska a Eastern.

A Little road trip i made today, from Iecava to Ķekava on A7.
MAP:

Blue is the route i took.

Now this is just before the end of Iecava.

Just outside Iecava.

After railway bridge which leads till Jēkapbils.

By the way this strecth from Iecava till Ķekava (almost) was reconstructed in 2006.

<-- Ziemeļi / Dzimtmisa, Stūri --> (All three of them are small villages)

We are getting closer to Ķekava.

And closer.

Here starts the old pavement, which should be reconstructed all the way till Riga in 2011/2012. This is about 3km before Ķekava roundabout. I didnt take
any picture further,

BTW, anyone knows where exactly A7 is now being reconstructed? I tought it was in Iecava, but i didnt see any signs of road construction there.

In your dreams.

1) Where will you get money for it when it's impossible even to get money for repairing existing road network to normal condition?
2) Do we really need such motorways everywhere? I agree that some stretches need widening to 2+2 because of high AADT volumes (like A7) but all other?
AADT A10 after Tukums decreases to ~5000 vehicles per day. Do we need 2+2 for that? Sure that no.
Same with A9, except small stretch from Grobiņa to Liepāja.
A6. WTF? What about E22 Tīnūži - Koknese? And planned Koknese - Pļaviņas and Pļaviņas - Jēkabpils? Should we drop these projects away? By the way, AADT after Līvāni is like 1000-3000 vehicles per day. Motorway? You gonna be kidding.
A12 - look at AADT. Any comments?
A7 needs Ķekava bypass. Most of other stretch is with NP14 cross section that has greater capacity that usual cross section. Same with A1.

But as long as roads will be planned by politicians not road engineers, everything will be like that.

I agree. Other than the A7, I don't see much need for dual carriageways. It should be possible to get EU money for the A7.

What is NP14?

I guess that Ķekava bypass would be even done if there isn't such bad economical situation. But as far as I know, it might be built after some years when additional EU CF money will be available.

About NP. NP means "normālprofils", cross section in latvian.
It looks like this:

As you see, it has got wider paved shoulders. It means that slower vehicles like trucks can move a bit on right to make easier overtaking.

Sorry about great size, couldn' t resize them.

To me it also looks like overkill. But do not be that pessimistic, it seems that starting from 2012 our roads finally should become better.
1) In 2011 - 2012 134 mio EUR will go in reconstruction of 360 km of A class roads. This will make our A class roads fairly good. B class and V class though it another story.
http://www.lvceli.lv/LV/?i=648
2) No one speaks about motorways here, these are expressways.
- Riga - Tukums might need 2+2, but, f.e. in Kemeri national park it basically might stay as it is, just wider shoulder need to be added. Remaining part up to Ventspils really does not need too much changes, may be Pure - Kandava might need some serious update.
- A9 Riga Liepaja - you are right. 2+2 might be needed also near Riga, until those recently built villages end.
- E22 Riga - Plavinas is already a solved issue, it's clear that this will be built. Don't know about Plavinas - Jekabpils, but that one is not the worst part today.

I would say that Latvia basically needs to bring in order existing roads. Serious upgrgades are needed only on Riga roundabout and in Riga City.

It's NP 15,5 in Latvia. It's theoretical because it's never used. Something like that is used on A9 in Rudbārži to create climbing lane for slower trucks.

In other countries width of such cross section can be approximately from 11 to 20 m. It depends on lane width, shoulder width, barrier and so on. If you are interested in 2+1 then try to read this thread:

Ok, here go 3 more or less suitable pictures:

I got more of them (some even posted few pages before) but it takes time to sort them...
If you have special wish (like bridge on A4, photo in curve or whatever) then I may try to find suitable picture if only I have one like that.

by the way, are you editing Latvian version of Wikipedia about A4?

I tried to search and found this one:
http://lv.wikipedia.org/wiki/A4_%28a...atvij%C4%81%29

There is a mistake made by creaator of article - should be A6 instead of A5 (in section Krustojošie ceļi).
