Eastern highway
Update - 14.11.2011.

Self made map of EH in Riga. Straight lines show the existing parts of EH as of October, 2011. The dashed one is in development process, construction could start soon as Riga will find 20 mio LVL. Pictures are from today and I covered the recently opened parts (Brīvības avenue-Viestura prospect), in the map it's the upper part:

1. We start near Brīvības avenue in direction to port. This is one of the first parts of EH opened in 1998 with a total lenght at that time 1 km.

2. 800m of this part is a viaduct over Riga-Sigulda rail line. View to opposite direction (Brīvības ave.).

3. View towards port again. The recently opened continuation of formerly known Vairoga viaduct (now it's Gustava Zemgala?).

4. I'm surprised that there were no direction signs at this exit and neither I saw on Brīvības avenue.

5. Sound barriers.

6. Under viaduct. View towards port.

7. Further this viaduct connects already in 2008 opened part of EH.

8. We move forward to another recently opened viaduct over Meža prospect. This is the start, if coming from Brīvības ave..

9. From the same place, only the view is in port direction.

10. Port direction.

11. Brīvības ave. direction.

12. View from a hill.

13. Finally some rather good signage appears at this crossing.

14. This is the first time I see illuminated signs in Latvia.

15. From Mežaparks direction.

16.

17. From Sarkandaugava direction.

18. Joining point with EH from previous crossing. Port direction.

19. A look back.

20. View towards city center. Aproaching Viestura and Meža prospect crossing.

21. How EH started and ended with a traffic light. Hopefully this is just temporary.

Wow, illuminated signage, i didnt see that coming.
Nice upadate Ripley, dou you think that the last part of Eastern Magistral could start next year? I know that they are now demolishing some private houses and warehouses, that are in the way.

Awesome pics ! & I like the new signage much more ! Latvia & Lithuania's roads & signage are going the right way. "PLESKAVA PSKOV (RUS)", "KAUŅA KAUNAS (LT)" or "ŠAUĻI ŠIAULIAI (LT)" is much clearer than "PLESKAVA", "KAUŅA" or "ŠAUĻI" alone for tourists !

I think it's about time to start construction. Draft design was already completed in 2010 and in the latest news I heard that RS is buying properties which are on the highway path, there were also problems with some owners, which slowed down the purchasing process. But it's great to hear that they started to doing something. Perhaps that's a good sign, since RS promised EH finished in 2012.

A8 is not finished yet. All restrictions were removed, because "Panevėžio keliai" went to a technological break which will last untill Spring, then works will be resumed.

Yeah, i know but LVceli dosent show that in there list (which is strange, because they always show the road works which are in technological break too), so i removed it. In Spring i will have to add it again.

Yes, works on both carriageways do not match. Riga direction is from Jaunolaine till Riga.
I guess that Ripley knows that and you didn't understand him right.

What I meant is that direction to Jelgava on this dual carriageway is more or less smooth to drive now compared to the opposite direction, still there are few segments that need reconstruction near the pedestrian bridge in Jaunolaine & Dalbe and J-olaine-Olaine part.

I drove through Valga/Valka about two years ago. It felt a bit like crossing Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin, with chain-link fencing dividing the two parts of the town. The Latvian border police even had an illegal checkpoint in place, illegally stopping cars and illegally checking papers in violation of Article 20 of EU Regulation 562/2006 (Schengen Borders Code).

Hmm, Google has 2010 imagery from that location, but I can't find the bypass.

This is a map i made in 2010. The bypass goes something along this route. The purple is reocnstruction of existing streets, and the red is a new road built for bypass. Though i am not 100% sure that my map is correct.
