I'm not sure about A12. I know that there's a nice section Jēkabpils - Varakļāni but after that situation gets worse. No way that there can be 100 kph till Ludza.

Intresting, LVC homepage says "atsevišķos autoceļa A12 Jēkabpils – Rēzekne – Ludza posmos." (some parts of A12). A12 Jēkabpils-P84 is in a good condition. The small part between P84 and Varakļāni is in satisfactory condition, but Varakļāni-Ludza is awful. Furthermore A6's Nīcgale-Daugavpils bypass also gets 100, even though the road conditions are pretty much the same as A12 after P84, except for a short part near Nīcgale, which is in a good cindition.

A dangerous situation

Due to lack of available parking people are deciding to park their cars on the hard shoulders, acceleration, braking lanes and bus stops of the A2 3+3.

Yesterday there was absolutely no space on the sides of the main road and a heavy congestion. Today, after the drivers had received a 40 € fine, there are less cars and no congestion. Which is more dangerous since the drivers speeding at 80 kph might not see a car or bus pull out in front of them.

This problem should be solved by the proposed Park & Ride nearby. But now, since the last Park & Ride was a failure, they will probably not build it.

I couldn't agree more. Tender for the remaing part untill Lithuanian border has been completed and the entire segment from Jelgava to Meitene (LT) should be completed by 2016.

And btw, I think road construction map for 2014 hasn't been posted here: http://lvceli.lv/files/kartes/LatvCeluRem2014.pdf

Anyone got any pics from the Ludza-Nirza road being built?

Or maybe some info about the progress?

As you can see in MichiH's thread, A12 is scheduled to open in October. Unfortunetly there are only a few small images in Strabag's site. Construction of gravel foundation is nearing completion now.

Photo story: A1/E67 resurfacing in Ādaži

Upon arriving in Ādaži drivers are greeted with signs "50" and "30" placed just meters apart

Drivers are diverted to the paralleling Rīgas gatve. As you can see, to allow travel in both directions, the road had to be widened a bit

In true cyclist fashion I chose to ignore the "No entry" sign and to drive onwards
End of part 1

Part 2

Looking towards Tallinn from the pedestrian overpass

It seems that the Latvian army doesn't have any good strategic information. This army lorry, which was full of soldiers, found out that the main road was closed only when it arrived at the closed on-ramps. The NATO jet fighters, that I could hear in the skies above, made me feel a bit more comfortable about our military strength though.
End of part 2

Part 3

It seems that the road will retain the recently installed 70 kph speed limit thanks to the geniuses who had the brilliant idea that the 12 000 daily Ādaži bypass users were actually 12 000 customers, searching the A1 desperately for Hesburgers, supermarkets and yes, even a plastic window retailer. So they slowly transformed the highway into a shopping street. They should add street vendors and bike lanes to complete the transformation!

End of story

I've heard that a few pedestrians walking from Stapriņciems to Ādaži have been hit by cars and that's why this speed limit has been put there (because of pressure of municipality). In fact I don't give a shit about all those pedestrians. They all may die and nobody should worry about them. Why we all have to suffer because of these idiots?

In case you don't know, a bit from history. Like 10 years ago VIA Baltica corridor was reconstructed and Ādaži was a problem. A new road was built and the old one become Rīgas gatve (take a look at the map). Everything was OK back then - citizens of Ādaži used Rīgas gatve for shopping and driving around the town but transit flow used A1 road. Now everything is becoming the way it was back then.
If some idiots built their houses in the wrong side of the road it's their problem.

In that case they should have put up a fence. Or even raised the speed limit to 120 to scare the people There are two pedestrian bridges for f***'s sake!

Actually, now thinking about it - a plain fence wouldn't change anything as we can see on the A2 near the junction with A1/A4:

Three lanes in both directions with cars doing about 110. The 2nd highest AADT on the Latvijas Valsts ceļi network. There is a dedicated pedestrian bridge 900 m in Rīga direction. And 100 m in the other direction - the A1 bridge. You would still break a few laws by crossing there, but it would be much safer for both you and drivers.

Only an electric fence with barbed wire would change the habits of people...
