Heh, that's why we're just waiting for our part to collapse

Still, I'd very much like to see some pics form PL/LT border, we don't have much of these in our forum section.

\/ Thanks

What are the requirements for motorways in Lithuania (lane width, emergency lanes, etc)?

I really like Warszawa signs. Shame on us not to have Vilnus on our ones

You have Kaunas signed, but only 18 km before the border.

Fantastic tour, RipleyLV. Thank you very much

I really don't understand why they install U turns like this one though. Even if it's not officially a motorway in that stretch, traffic is very intense around Kaunas and it's just very dangerous to make such a maneuver. Otherwise I love the A1 Vilnius-Klaipeda road.

Well, the U turns case is only about money. This is dangerous like hell, maybe over there speed limits are respected, but as RipleyLV will tell you, on DK8 Warsaw - Piotrków, also with U turns, 150 km/h is a normal speed.

Vilnius is not really on a main road from Poland, for instance, on DK8, Kaunas or even Riga would make more sense, since that's where the Lithuanian A5 is going.

Such a great report! Thanks RipleyLV Did you use local road 195 instead of E67 Via Baltica when you drove from Panevėžys bypass to Kaunas ?
By the way - Kaunas bypass should really have atleast expressway status.

PLH: I will try to search about motorway lanes width requirements - haven't found anything yet

I just entered Lithuanian road administration page and they say, that yesterday contract was signed to start construcion works in Grigiškės town (A1 road just before Vilnius). So start of 1st reconstruction part should start really soon
They will build 1 viaduct, 1 pedestrian bridge, make bike and pedestrian paths, also some fences near road. Estimate of 1st part works ~6.4 million EUR, projected finish - 29th of June 2010

You're not exactly right, because A2 Vilnius - Panevėžys is also a motorway

This is true. I don't understand what the problem is... I mean in some cities (e.g. Bangkok) there are motorways/expressways passing right over the city center (although they are on elevated bridges) and 100-120km/h is a common speed. If they need to widen it to 3+3 lanes to cope with intense traffic then they should do so. By any means ~100km/h on such a road is a must to my understanding.

Personally I think what the problem is, that along the bypass are private houses and gravel roads from them cross with the highway. Maybe, if you build a parallel road to divide the bypass from local traffic (public transport, tractors, etc) then you could get a ekspressway or even a motorway status.
