Man, you're doing such a terrific job here! Thank you indeed! I think there's hardly any major route left in Lithuania that wasn't showed thanks to you!

You forgot Laisves prospektas in that map, the first few km are also a 2x2 express road with grade separated access.

You are right. Maybe I'll try to make a more comprehensive map... in fact there are even a few more such streets. Only I'm not sure if this is really sensible beceuase despite starting as a trunk-road type street it just bumps into what is a typical 2+2 city "avenue" with bunches of stuff to slow down the traffic. So in the end it doesn't really go anywhere and doesn't serve as a transit route from/to any direction while all the traffic going to the North would use the A2 route (called Gelezinio Vilko/Ukmerges street in the city).

Thanks!
I really love doing it

My next objective is a video of A2 all he way from Vilnius to Klaipėda and perhaps A13 from Klaipėda to Palanga.

If it's zoomed-out it looks outdated by about 10 years in Lithuania and by about 2 years when zoomed in.
Anyway, a very good map, I will have to spend some more time exploring it.

I have received an email from the Lithuanian Road Agency where they answered a couple of questions.

The most important ones were regarding the possibility of any new motorway/expressway standard roads in Lithuania besides formally upgrading the A1 Vilnius-Kaunas to a motorway.

According to them the A5 Kaunas-Marijampolė (part of Via Baltica) will get motorway or expressway status in the future after which it is likely that A8 from Kaunas to Panevėžys may also be reconstructed to 2+2 and get the motorway or expressway sign.

So all in all it would look like this:

There was no mention about A9 though. A9 from Šiauliai to Panevėžys should also eventually be made a 2+2, possibly without level junctions, however, I assume, it will just be a 2+2 road without any special status.

However, I don't think this will happen any time before 2020 or even later. The Kaunas-Marijampolė stretch may go ahead a little earlier though.

For a reference, here is a 2009 map of traffic volumes

thousand vehicles/day

Pansori, as today news about A9 reconstruction says: current under construction to 2x2 stretch Radviliškis - Šiauliai (10.5 km long) will get expressway status So, I think it's possible for remaining stretches, that are still not 2x2, get the expressway status after reconstruction in late future.

And about the answer from road administration - did they mention when A5 is going to be reconstructed to motorway? They talked about 2013 - is it possible ?

No, they did not mention any dates at all. Not even about A1. Long time ago (about 3-4 years) they mentioned 2015 for A1.

P.S. good news about that A9 stretch getting expressway sign. It was by far theworst stretch of any A-roads in Lithuania and now will be one of the best.
Too bad it's only 10km for now.

^ Amazingly sweet to hear that! This should be the most important step of creating a pan-Baltic motorway in future! I really wish them luck with A8 because realising this project it will become capable to travel through Lithuania in great conditions, and further to Latvia and Estonia!

There is some fresh news from the construction of Vilnius Western bypass.

The first stage of the project is scheduled to be complete by February 2011, however it is expected that the works will be completed ahead of schedule by September 2010.

Map of how the first stage looks like (someone already put it on the map in Wikimapia, although it's not complete yet)

So at the present it won't do much good and will only provide a better access to the nearby quarters which previously had to use the nearby Laisvės Prospektas. Still this should take away at least part of the traffic from that street.

The second stage (i.e. stretch from the end of stage 1 to about the middle of the dotted line) is expected to start late this year just before the completion of the first stage with estimated financing of about 58 million €.

Also I have updated the previously posted map of existing/UC/Planned access routes in Vilnius.

In the original map I completely forgot the "Northern Street" which is the Northern-most horizontal blue line on the map. The Northern street will connect the Western bypass with other main "trunk" streets in the Northern part of Vilnius so effectively being a part of the Inner Ring road. It is not expected to be done by 2015 though. I wonder why because the area where the new street is planned has been empty for decades now and there are no obstacles to build it. It was planned long ago since the 1970's or so even before the current residential districts were built in the area.

With Gods blessing (too bad he doesn't exist ), if all those projects will be completed as planned, Vilnius should have a truly excellent street network.

Inspired by Pansori, brought to you by Fredis

On weekend, I was traveling from Kaunas to Vilkviškis, my native town. So I decided to try to take photos from A5 and A7. I didn't know if like it or I won't, but to say the truth I got quite interesting and the time of driving looked very small ) I had only one problem, that was my dog, it was enjoying and it made a screen a bit messy to take photos, but I hope it will be ok for you. I pointed B where my photo died, it didn't make to Vilkaviškis. But there will be more photos on the way back and from other little road from Vilkaviškis to Vištytis.

I started to take photos from leaving Kaunas. And now I see that maps.google.com made it complicated, cos it's maps is very old as everybody knows.

A5 and A7

See how maps.google suggests to drive and you can switch to satellite view and you will be able to see the nonsense. I put a yellow line where I drove.

New round about. Two or three years ago there were a lot of accidents, cos it was stupid thing left from old times. If I wanted to leave Kaunas and to go towards Marijampolė, i would had to make a left turn on 2+2 road, can you imagine that?

Very "nice" speed limit

I still remember the times when this bridge wasn't here. I still remember the queue and the time spend on counting trains )

The tarmac is quite bad from the trucks. But it was repaired two or three year ago and still….

Smooth road. With big hardsholders. Easy to overtake truck if it's driver is used to step aside, near the grass. I noticed that my driver worked hard to overtake Slovakian trucks or even few polish trucks, cos they see no need to step aside. Lithuanians, Latvians and basically all Polish and Russian trucks know how to turn the wheels to the right )))

Those red marks made it more safely and they are very rough for your car

Sometimes it gets very busy on A5

That is exactly why Lithuania (and Poland) rank among the bottom of Europe in traffic safety... Such passing is a recipe for deadly head-on collisions. If they want the roads that wide anyway, they better make it 2+1 or 2x2 lanes.
