"zaraza-Šiauliai" form ************ is back again with update on A9 road. In my map: http://www.pauliusd.com/miestai/LT_roadmap.jpg A9 expressway construction stretch is marked with number 2.

Approaching construction area (driving from Šiauliai to Radviliškis direction). Old road has a quite bad qualitty

Construction starts here

Making detour because of underground crossing construction

Here still lots of work remains

Noise barrier will be build soon

Still missing an asphalt here

Don't know what they will do with thisviaduct, because it's impossible to put normal 4 lanes under it

Radviliškis town is close

1st reconstruction part of A1 stretch (~2.5 km long) through Grigiškės town (suburb of Vilnius) was finished not long time ago. Dual carriageway should be standartised to motorway status stretch during 3 stages of the project.
Originaly posted by zorro from ************.
You can see new vs old stretch. In following picture left side is direction from Vilnius to Kaunas. Pictures taken from newly built pedestrians bridge

To Kaunas direction

Newly built pedestrian bridge

During first stage of project, new 2 level crossing just before Grigiškės town was constructed and road was reconstructed towards Kaunas direction. 2nd stage will include works of renovating lanes direction to Vilnius and building 2 levels interchange just at the beginning of Grigiškės town while entering it from Kaunas to Vilnius direction.

Great. When it's opening? And how this new highway is connected from the other side? AFAIK, this stage ends a bit after the tunnel.

It's scheduled to open by spring, 2011 it should be connecting with A2 (Vilnius- Panevezys), but only after all 3 stages will be finished, as now it's only in a 1st stage under construction, 2nd stage hasn't been confirmed yet, but some say it should start around late 2011

I know about the further connection to A2, but what I meant in the previous post was, how to access the 1st stage from the other side after opening? Since the 2nd stage isn't ready yet.

Yes, it will continue just few hundread meters after the tunnel. After this it will be connected to L.Asanavičiūtės street and using this street drivers will be able to reach Laisvės prospektas. I wouldn't like to live on L.Asanavičiūtės street, because it should get really busy and noisy till 2nd stage of western bypass will be completed.
Actually now this 3 levels intersection is big construction site with direction to almost nowhere

I'm not too sure about a map, but I can tell you that there is a plan to upgrade the section of E67 (Via-Baltica) between Kaunas and Marijampole to a motorway, however the construction of it is only planned to begin in around 2012-2014

Also that section of A9 between Siauliai and Panevezys is planned to be a motorway, however I kind of doubt if it will all be finished by 2020

Goog news!

Over the next few years A1 Vilnius - Kaunas is getting expressway status and 110km/h speed limit (at present mostly 100km/h) albeit it has a short stretch of expressway with a 110km/h near Kaunas which was an "experiment" running for a few years.

It will be done in stages with the first stage activated from summer 2011. In a couple of years all Vilnius - Kaunas will be an expressway with a 110km/h speed limit. There is no news about when and if it will ever get a motorway sign but it is still a good news nonetheless.

Also, the motorway stretch between Kaunas and Klaipeda will have some speed limitations removed in some locations (my guess is that they will remove all or some of the 110km/h limitations near some junctions of which there are quite a few).

So overall travel time between Vilnius and Kaunas and Vilnius and Klaipeda should improve a bit which is always a good news.

More importantly, the speed limit feels more natural - a consideration which is often overlooked when discussing the speed limit, but is a major factor for driving faster than the speed limit.

A9 road expressway stretch construction. "Zaraza-Šiauliai" from ************ posted a video of expressway stretch construction between Radviliškis and Šiauliai on A9 road. I guess expressway will start just after roundabout which you can see at 0:42 in video.

Road A1 Vilnius-Kaunas. By the way it's a good news about expressway status for this road, but unfortunately I saw some bad news about this road too. Now minister of transportation said, that the road should get motorway status on 2018 They supposed to make it motorway till 2013 according past plans. Now another 7 years to wait? WTF I said when I read an article. At least they will make it expressway...
By the way after implementing speed limits changes on A1 road, minister says, that journey between Vilnius and Kaunas will shorten by 6-8 minutes and Kaunas to Klaipėda about 15 minutes.
More details: Currently 13 km stretch of A1 between Vilnius and Kaunas (~100 km) is an expressway. Next year expressway stretch will be extended to 38 km long and in 2012 to 63 km long stretch.

By the way the pic of Jakai intersection construction near Klaipėda (Junction of A1 and A13):

They decided to paint it with yellow color - brave decision

Laagna road in Tallinn had colour-coded, nametagged viaducts for a while:

(author: Risto Vähi on pilt.delfi.ee)

The colouring project was never fully completed, but for a few years we had yellow, orange, red, light blue and dark blue viaducts there.

I accidentally clicked on this thread, but I noticed at the top of the page, people driving though a construction zone. Is this normal in Lithuania?

Yes, when the Southern Bypass of Vilnius (between the Savanoriu Ring and the Minsk Road) was in the final three or four months of construction, there were people driving on it during nights and weekends. Throughout the construction period of a few years, I would walk along the construction route through the construction zone. The guards would sometimes watch to make sure I wasn't stealing construction supplies, but no one ever asked me to leave the construction zone.

It's normal, because it's not a completely new road. There was 1x2 road, which is now being widened to 2x2 so, traffic still have to drive and road builders organise traffic to combine both construction works and traffic. If you want to bypass this construction area, you have to do a big detour, so it's better to organise traffic like this.

This year i was in Lithuania on my holiday (In Šventoji near Palanga) and what I discovered in my trip (I was driveing from Suwalki, so it was DK8 in Poland, A5, A1, A13 in Lithuania) that you must take more care of A1. It is just so bad, that such a good road is getting worse. In some parts it was unable to drive 130km/h (it is still posible to return somwhere and it's really dangerous). I would say - you Main Roads (like A5) are just great and I wish that in Poland they will be as good as yours in the future but your Motorways are... oh well it is easy to see - they are just old.
