Hey, I'm gathering some information about roads in Lithuania and I hope you could help me.

How many motorways have you got (with green motorway sign)? As far as I now, roads A1 and A2 are motorways but probably there are more.

Can you get me some information about traffic volumes on them (for year 2009 or even 2010 if it's possible). I found a map on Lithuanian Road Administration home page (http://www.lra.lt/en.php/lithuanian_...c_volumes/1848) but isn't there anything a bit more precise?

Thanks in advance.

Motorways in Lithuania are:
1) A1 road, stretch Kaunas - Klaipėda, approx. 215 km
2) A2 road Vilnius - Panevėžys, approx. 128 km

There is also 1 stretch of an expressway on A1 between Vilnius and Kaunas, length - 13 km
Other parts of Vilnius - Kaunas and road stretches: A13 between Klaipėda and Palanga, A12 Šiauliai - Bubiai, A6 Kaunas - Jonava and A9 Šiauliai - Kuršėnai are oridinary 2x2 dual carriageways

Update: Length of motorways in Lithuania - 309.1 km. Total number of 2x2 roads - 575.2 km;

By they way - Jevpls. I post a great map of Lithuanian road network traffic intensity. Just bad, that this map shows data of 2007, so you should incease numbers on main roads some, I guess, 5% or so. The highest number I see is on Kaunas northern bypass - 47599. Such road fits traffic intensity suitable for making it to 2x3 motorway, because current 2x2 dual carriageway can not handle such traffic volumes

Xmaster, thanks a lot!
By the way, should I increase volumes 5% per year or only 5% for 2007-2010 period?

5% per year is too much I think, usually I would use 2 - 3% per year for major roads, but with the current recession, traffic will more likely decrease than increase in the 2008 - 2010 period.

Could you please tell us how many of these motorways were built for Lithuania by the Soviet authorities and how many by the independent Lithuania since 1990 ?

Yesterday snow arrived to Lithuania. "Zoro" from ************ posted few pics of A1 Vilnius - Kaunas road.
Towards newly built overpass near Elektrėnai town. Old was destroyed because of poor condition and this new one was built.

From the top of viaduct. Cops on the right are waiting for speeders, because near town, 1-2 km stretch speed is limited to 70-80 km/h

Limited because of guys like one on the right, which is hitchhiking and standing almost on driving lane.

Now recently repaved road stretch which passes through Vievis town.
Towards Vilnius

Towards Kaunas

By the way Vilnius municipality unexpectedly announced, that they approved the project to build estacade over the one of main arteries in Vilnius - Geležinis vilkas street to A. Goštauto street.
Some poor renders: (c) delfi.lt

This estacade will connect the traffic, which drive from southern part of Vilnius towards business triangle (lots of offices) or parliament. Estacade and reconstruction of 1 km long stretch of Geležinis Vilkas street will cost approx. 9 mln. EUR. It is quite strange that municipality put priority to this project, because there are still a lot of more important infrastructure project should be implemented in Vilnius. We guessing, they do this, because of newly proposed offce building (on the left in photo), that will be in Business triangle:

Viaduct near Klaipėda (junction of A1 and A13) is waiting for the opening (proposed on 17th December).

And some poor qualitty photos of expressway construction on A9 road between Šiauliai and Radviliškis. Stretch should be finished on 21st December. Currently just crash barriers and some lanes painting is missing.

Tender for construction works will be published during January 2011, so I guess works will start on spring.

By the way, winter wonderland on A1 between Kaunas and Klaipėda last week

And the bridge construction in Druskininkai town to connect town with indoor snow arena, which construction is in progress

And how this place looked in year 2008

Also today a contract was signed for the 2nd stage of works. Cost of the project is 16.8 mln. EUR, works should be finished by the end of 2012. During 2nd stage viaducts Palanga -> Kaunas (3rd level) and Kaunas -> Palanga (2nd level) will be built and also 4.5 km of roads close to intersection will be renovated including current roundabout. Following is the scheme of works, green color signed are works for the 2nd stage of the construction:

What did you mean "built in one month"? In one or one and half month (from a pic where I wrote how it looked a month ago) they made final touches.Painted, installed some crashbarriers and so on

Xsmaster didn't post this here yet so I'll do it for him (he found it in the Lithuanian Road Agency website).

The A1 stretch near Kaunas is going to be widened to 3+3 lanes from the current 2+2. The stretch is about 13km long and is just north of Kaunas city.

This project was announced a while ago but now the contracts are signed for project preparation which means it is definitely going ahead and the mentioned date of completion is 2015.

Traffic intensity in the stretch is around 31000 AADT and in a very short stretch between A5 and Mega Shopping Mall (which has it's own viaduct and a 2 level junction) it is around 47000 AADT in both cases having a clear trend to go up.

Video of the stretch in question. At the moment it is the worst bottleneck of the entire A1. As you see it doesn't even have paved shoulders in places and generally looks a bit messy without decent connecting roads in the area This is going to change and we'll be able to drive on a nice 3+3 road with shoulders (possibly even 4+4 in some short stretches?) and less interference from the nearby objects since new connecting roads will also be built/improved. The situation overall is not tragic but it's balancing on being acceptable/unacceptable during busier times and is definitely not compatible with expressway standard hence the speed is limited to 80km/h which is a major slow-down on the A1. After reconstruction it should fully comply to contemporary motorway standard.

Reconstruction will take place in the stretch from about 0:00 to about 2:40

It's good to see, that safety on Lithuanian roads is also improving. One fifth less people have been killed on roads during 2010 in comparison with 2009. 300 people have been killed during 2010, which is 0.09 per 1000 people if I calculated correctly.

Trend down was achived by significantly increased fines for speeding and drunk driving and also funding have been increased for improving safety on roads while recconstructing dangerous crossings etc. From all killed on roads, 1/3 are pedestrians, who still don't pay enough attention in safety while walking during dark on roads. Drunk drivers killed 26 people, which is 4 times less than 4 years ago.

By the way about project for 2011. Lithuanian road administration answered, that they still don't have final estimate for project in 2011, but nevertheless main projects will be:

1) On A9 road between Šiauliai and Radviliškis current works for 6.5 km stretch should be finished and 9.38 km long Kairiai town bypass (will be 2x2 road) construction works should start. After Constructing approx 16 km of 2x2 road, 10.6 km from it will be an expressway standard road, so 110 km/h speed limit

2) 2nd stage of A1 and A13 intersection will start. 2 estacades will be built and 4.5 km of roads around it will be renovated. Green lines are for 2nd stage

3) 2nd stage of construction works in Grigiškės town on A1 between Vilnius and Kaunas will start. Road through town will fit motorway standard after 3 stages of reconstruction. 1st stage is already completed.
Right side of road in this photo going to be reconstructed. Left one been already reconstructed during 1st stage. Stretch thorugh Grigiškės town is approx 3 km long.

4) First 1.9 km long stretch of southern Vilnius bypass should be started to reconstruct to 2x2 road.

5) Some repavements of stretches on A1, A6 and A12 should be implemented too
