So the tender for Kairiai bypass on A9 road was announced, so some provided details:
- The length: 9.18 km long. Approx 6 km will be an 2x2 expressway, other 3 km dual carriageway.
- 3 grade separated intersections
- 2 underground pedestrians crossings, 1 underground pass for both cars and people
- Adjacent roads on whole stretch

Below the scheme of bypass is provided. Click on image for a bigger view. The cloverleaf intersection on the left will be also the intersection for future planned eastern bypass of Šiauliai.

An update on current status of A9 reconstuction, posted by copper from ************

Crossing Radviliškis town. Road was reconstructed few years ago from 1x2 to 2x2 road

Quite difficult to drive on it with limit of 50 km/h, because I guess the road is safe for higher speed limits, like 70 km/h

Few hundred meters away from town new roundabout was constructed

Here an expressway should start. Works were rstored after the winter, but they doing just something with adjacent roads, but aren't installing crash barriers etc. Don't know when they're planning to finish works

A big part of new road was not photographed, comming to the end

The end of stretch. 2nd stage will start soon, so the road will turn to the left while bypassing Kairiai town

A Pictureless update: from today a road A1 Vilnius-Kaunas is upgraded from a simple dual carriageway (100km/h) to an expressway standard (110km/h) also in the future (few years time, we're not sure when exactly) it will get a motorway status (130km/h), so that's the news of the day

- A new bridge over Nemunas river in Alytus town is nearly being finished. The problem is, that a connecting road from one side isn't constructed yet
Photos from: http://www.kelprojektas.lt/lt/projek...=Tiltai&page=2

- Reconstruction works in A1 between Vilnius and Kaunas, just before Grigiškės town, from direction Kaunas -> Vilnius. If I'm correct it is the only stretch, ~1 km, that has no shoulder lane. It will be constructed now.
(c) oranger from ************

Also widening road on A1 in Grigiškės town to fit motorway standards.

Where is that bridge in Alytus exactly? I noticed there is an old railway alignment, but the bridge across the Nemunas is missing.

Hi guys, are the four digit numbered roads (as marked on government mapping and Bing) signed with those numbers?

Recently Mrt for ************ posted a great video, taken with GoPro camera.
The video starts near oldtown of Kaunas, driver crosses Nemunas river and uses Marvelės street to join Via Baltica/Western bypass of Kaunas. She was driving to join A1 motorway, direction Kalipėda

Southern Bypass of Vilnius that will connect A1 (Vilnius-Kaunas-Klaipeda) and A3 (Vilnius-Minsk) bypassing the city.

The second part (purple line) will be a completely new road.

The first 9km part of the project on the other hand, will be a reconstruction of existing 1x1 road into 2x2 with addition of a number of new 2-level junctions and a couple new railroad viaducts.

(c)Zorro, from ************/forumas

Currently, 2km are under reconstruction.

Starting at the intersection with A1 (Vilnius-Kaunas-Klaipeda)

first new 2-level junction

looking back at the first junction

Viaducts will be built at railroad crossings

Second stage will start late next year.

I'm surprised this is needed. I thought the new expressway which opened a few years ago from the Savanoriu Ring to the A3 was the southern bypass. Opening that greatly reduced traffic in the city. The western bypass will help too. It seems to me that Vilnius isn't really big enough to justify a second southern bypass, but I haven't been there since the beginning of October, so maybe traffic is getting worse.

Anyway, thanks for the photos and the update.

That is what I was wondering too. Vilnius could easily do with the existing Southern and Western bypass to connect A3, A1 and A2. The only good reason to have the second one is to also connect A16/A4 to A1/2/3. Anyway I'm happy because more roads=good.

Interesting unorthodox motorway interchange design concept in Lithuania. Several are said to be planned around Vilnius.

Nice video. I don't like the fact that there are few hard shoulders and that slip roads are too short in most cases. Also:

00:30 - road markings look really bad for a new road;
00:47 - fast lane enters the slow lane without virtually any slip road at the junction;
01:01 - bus stop without any slip roads! [are you fkin kidding me?!];
01:20 - an example of how not to build junctions;

A9 Siauliai - Panevezys

Video of A9 between Siauliai and Panevezys

After 3:40 the newly built expressway stretch from Siauliai to Radviliskis. Another stretch soon will be U/C which will make it an expressway all the way from Siualiai to Radviliskis with the legal speed limit of 110km/h.

Map (approximate route)
