I saw somewhere (maybe on their official site or some newspaper article), that there is a possibility, that after Kaunas- Marijampolė, they could build Vilnius- Molėtai highway/dual carriageway(??), because now on some sections it has 10 000 AADT and even more during summer weekends (a lot of lakes near Molėtai,- could be nicknamed little Finnish Lakeland/Järvi-Suomi- Molėtų ežerynas) up to 20 000, and the numbers will be one of the fastest growing during the comming decades, because of suburbanisation and rural tourism.

Also road Vilnius- Nemenčinė will be upgraded in
some comming years and may get some blue sign
something like this, maybe:

The project of modernisation is finished and waiting.

What is the speed tolerance in Lithuania ? 5 km/h ? 10 km/h ?

10km/h is what everyone keeps saying (including the media). Someone mentioned me once that the speed cameras have a tolerance of 20km/h but not sure how reliable that is.

It used to be 20 km/h, but they reduced it to 10 km/h (or at least they say they did).

Some updates from construction sites in Lithuania.
1) Vilnius southern bypass construction. They are building a viaduct now over road A4.
(c) Zorro from ************

Far away new viaduct is visible

Here are some photos of already constructed part, which is going to be finished soon.
(c) Romas from ************

New viaduct, which I mentioned before

2) Construction of western bypass of Vilnius, 2nd stage

(c) SPX from ************
A place where 1st stage ends and construction of 2nd stage begins

Electricity poles are still not removed, so it disturbs construction a bit

Still a lot of work to do

Western bypass will go under an existing Pilaitės avenue

Gariūnai street and bridge, which connects western bypass with southern bypass modernisation works are in the progress too and is expected to be finished in this year
(c) xxl from ************

3) Works in A1 road between Vilnius and Kaunas near Grigiškės town are finished. This short stretch was only in whole distance, without a hard shoulder. Also from a point of next photos expressway status of a road turns to an usual dual carriageway
(c) Zorro from ************

By the way. A stretch looked like this in year 2009. A photo taken by me:

Already in Grigiškės town
This looks strange, but that how second stage works in Grigiškės town have been finished. Now some procedures are going to be implemented and third stage will start, which means a road will be normally connected

So now both lanes in Grigiškės town are now wide enough and renovated. That's why speed limit in town was raised to 100 km/h

4) Jakai interchange near Klaipėda construction works are back again after a winter
(c) xxl from ************

5) An expressway construction works between Šiauliai and Radviliškis on A9 road (Kairiai town bypass) could be best visible in Agnette videos in previous messages in this thread.

A better update of Vilnius southern bypass constructions works was published by Zoro in ************ forum, so I share it here too.

Photos of first stage of construction.
A view from a viaduct road A1 Vilnius-Kaunas towards road A4

Newly built viaduct with Letvario street.

On the viaduct

A view towards A1 road

Here is the end of 1st stage of construction, 2nd stage started not long time ago

A road will go below excisting railroad

And then it will climb and pass road A4 from a top

Some more good news. Another 9km of A1 Vilnius-Kaunas was assigned an expressway status with a speed limit of 110km/h.

If my calculations are correct, at the moment 67km of A1 Vilnius-Kaunas has an expressway status with a speed limit of 110km/h which means that pretty much the entire non-urban stretch of A1 between Vilnius and Kaunas is an expressway.

Yes, you are right - it will be now 67 km in total.

I would like to add some general statistics.
In Lithuania there are 575 km of dual carriageways, whereas:
  • 309 km has motorway status (speed limit 130 km/h)
  • 72 km expressway status (speed limit 110 km/h)
  • 194 km other type dual carriageways with various speed limits, but not more than 100 km/h.

Another ~9 km of expressways will be added this year after completing Kairiai town bypass near Šiauliai on a road A9.

One bonus pic © A.Didžgalvis, originally posted in delfi.lt.

True but the hump is still too big for what should eventually be a motorway. I know that place very well and have taken photos there myself.

Few great photos of Vilnius western bypass construction were published by "vidoque" from ************
A view towards 2nd stage of bypass construction. 1st stage works have been completed last year.

Closer look. In this part a first layer of asphalt is already built

Multilevel junction with Oslo street

Other parts of bypass are still far away from a first layer of asphalt

Are there any plans of rebuilding/repaving A1 west of Kaunas? It's in awful condition when I was there last time (2nd May). It's pretty empty but ruts are terrible, especially on right line.
But A5 to from border to Kaunas is great
