Looks like the Sovietsk city bypass will be grade-seperated 1+1 highway

Given traffic levels and my presumption that the existing crossing will remain open, anything more than 1+1 would be wasteful. It's good that it will be grade-separated.

There will be an interchange with A198, otherwise it's a two-lane road. It crosses railroads with a viaduct, but it's not a full controlled-access highway.

You're right and the only reason why is only because of this: https://www.google.lt/maps/@55.03603.../data=!3m1!1e3

There are lots of underpasses like this that makes it look grade-seperated: https://goo.gl/maps/HE33p

Some new safety features were inroduced in Via Baltica between Panevėžys town and Latvian border.
5,4 km. long stretch with denied overtaking. Photos (c) Romas from ************. There is a mistake on photos - it is road no. A10, not A8.

I actually LOL'd at that barrier when I first saw it. On E67 it is already hard to overtake, but with those cones installed at nearly every crossing.. especially if you're behind a truck which is doing 80 km/h.

I drove this section last week, but couldn't figure out, why exactly there? As Ripley said, it's already hard overtaking the trucks there. Was there an accident blackspot before?

It would be appropriate at the Dutch border. There are few two-lane roads where you are still allowed to pass other vehicles in the Netherlands.

When was the Panevezys bypass built? As I understand, section between A2/A8 and A9 was built earlier than A9-A10 section.

Great montage BriedisUnIzlietne

makaveli6 - you are right, section between A2/A8 and A9 was built earlier than A9-A10 section. A9-A10 section was built in 1999 and section between A2/A8 and A9 in 1995.

Another question, some time ago I heard about plans to reconstruct A8 into a motorway. Is there more info on this, or that's just a long term plan?

It is a plan until year 2035 Current priority is Kaunas - Marijampole, A5 road, reconstruction to a motorway. We are expecting first tenders announced this year and first stretches reconstruction should start after winter.

That's very good news !
Sorry to ask so much, but are there any plans in the near future:
- to upgrade also the A5/E67 stretch Marijampolė - Kalvarija (LT/PL) ?
- to upgrade the A1/E85 Kaunas - Vilnius 2x2 road to a real motorway/expressway?
- to finish the Vilnius southern bypass - Medininkai (LT/BY) A1+A3/E85
- to make bypasses for the towns of Utena, Alytus and Lazdijai?

I think it's a good measure. Many Lithuanian drivers do have a very bad and a very dangerous habit of uncontrolled and even psychopatic urge to overtake a car in front of them. The urge is so immense that they are willing to sacrifice their own and others' lives for that purpose (overtaking the car in front). The attempt to curb it is a good thing and should help with saving lives of the population.
