Not far away from Kuzavinės.

Second pedestrian crossing next to Kuzavinės.

More sensors.

Some minor work still to be done.

This was not on the orginal project, these traffic lights did not suppose to be here, but locals protested it, and there we have it, another junction.

On the other side, towards Šiauliai.

Towards Kuršėnai.

I really doubt that 141 next to Klaipėda will be reconstructed to expressway. Yes, some of it (6 km) will be reconstructed to I category road, but the other 6 km will be reconstructed to Ia category road, which means it will have a speed limit of 90 km/h. Also, it will have a few roundabounts (I'm pretty sure they will be turbo-roundabouts).

As far as I concerned, current single-carriegeway road (from Jakai to Rimkai two-level junction) will be Ist category road (expressway status very possible), while current dual-carriegeway will be Ia category with roundabouts And yes, those roundabouts will be turboroundabouts. Next weekend I'm driving from Riga to Vilnius and on my way there I'd like to take some other route, insted of the usual A10-A2. I'm thinking of going through Utena, like this. Is this a good choice or maybe some of you could recommend some other route.

Utena to Vilnius is fine. I haven't driven the sections farther north.

The section north of Utena is the part im concerned of. It mainly consists of regional roads, and I have had some very bad experiences on Lithuanian regional roads (no offence).

I would say 1st stretch to concern is on Latvian side - ~8 km between Barbele and Skaistkalne. I drove it few times and it is a nightmare I would say. On Lithuanian side this route is pretty ok - 10 km stretch between Svėdasai and Utena is not in the best shape, and Utena - Vilnius needs softer suspension It is a concrete surface road which really demands renovation.

I am aware of the situation on P89, no need to bring that up on Lithuanian thread. Thanks for the situation report on LT side tho, I will probably take the route I posted above.

Hope you will have a good experience of this route

Yesterday, A11 road reconstruction between Šiauliai and Kuršėnai was officially finished. Almost 11 km long 2x2 stretch was renovated. Unfortunately few junctions with traffic lights were introduced. I hope traffic light system is pretty smart and it will not disturb significantly the general flow of traffic.

Why didn't they make it for real and grade seperated it?

Actually all Lithuanian forumers have this question and nobody knows why AADT is between 8000-10000, so it would make sense to do a proper upgrade with grade separated junctions

The cost would be an obvious reason.

The main problem with traffic lights on such roads is that they tend to jump red for just one car from the side road. As it is a light, but frequent flow of traffic from the minor road, through traffic will have to stop a lot.

I hope they have installed a longer green phase for through traffic, so the traffic lights don't jump to red the second one vehicle approaches the intersection from the minor side road. The best is to have sensors installed farther away than usual so they can detect traffic from a longer distance, keeping it green for through traffic for a longer period of time. In such occassions, through traffic should have priority over side road traffic.

Perhaps the lack of grade separation has got something to do with the nearby houses (seen in one of the photos)? Would have been too much hassle and money to remove them?

They could've moved the intersection a bit. I doubt that was the issue.

Most probably funding is an issue. It would increase a budget much more by building different levels junctions as well as taking private land plots for public needs

I don't really think that could be an issue, if they keep expressway level with grade separation they would only need to build fast rams and overpass/underpass, not much of a hassle for a functioning road.

Also AADT of 10000 seems quite low for 4 lane road, are there projections it will increase markedly?
