Today, Lithuanian Road Administration answered to my question where I asked about Via Baltica (E67) road. So they say, that technical project of reconstructing road A5 part from Markučiai to Marijampolė to 2x2 is being made. Theyjust didn't say if it is planned to be motorway, or just dualcarriageway with speed limit 100 km/h. By the way: planned part would be 33 km long.
The following is a scheme where such part is:

P.S. They also answered, why they don't make Klaipėda bypass to motorway standard road, because they are now reconstructing it to 2x2. They answered, that this road is near city and purpose was not to raise speed, but raise throughput. Blah blah blah

Hehe - would be good question But I think project is being made for a motorway, because I mentioned motorway standard and they didn't deny it

2 days ago I drove from Kaunas to Vilnius using A1 road, so I decided to make a photo tour for skyscrapercity forum
Here is a map from a start of taking pictures in point A and last photo in point B. Unfortunately A1 between Vilnius and Kaunas is not a motorway standard road. Just A1 from Kaunas to Klaipėda is a motorway. Technical project of converting Vilnius-Kaunas road to motorway is made, but it's a problem with funds, because of current economical crisis.

Trip summary in distance where I took pictures:
Length: 88 km
Duration: 49 minutes
Average speed: 107 km/h

Leaving 2x2 to Jonava and taking a turn to Vilnius. It says Vilnius 96 km, because it's a distance to a city center

Joined A1 road

Speed limit 100 km/h

Short (800 meters) part with speed limit 80 km/h

Juction with local road

Beginning of an expressway part ~10 km long.

Now I can raise my speed from 100 to 110

Continuing a trip

Expressway ends after 400 meters

Damn it. End of expressway, back to the speed 100

Viaduct ahead

1 km long part with a speed limit of 80 km/h

Speed camera on the left is waiting for speeders

Approaching Elektrėnai town which on the right of A1 road (if you come from Kaunas) and is known as a middle point of Vilnius-Kaunas road and it has a power plant

Turn to Elektrėnai ahead

Approaching Vievis town. Unfortunately we have to cross it, so speed limit 80
It's quite strange, that cars need to reduce speed, because there aren't any 1 level crossings in this town and there are fences near road

Newly built pedestrians bridge

This one too

Orthodox church on the left

End of Vievis town. 37 km till Vilnius

Electronic information sign. At this moment it says: Please do not throw trash

Woman on the right is selling berries

Driving along

Railroad bridge ahead

Restaurant and logistic center on the right

Restaurant-castle

Vilnius. Letters: "European capital of culture '09" were bellow, but it gone now. Have no idea why

No shoulder

Crossing Grigiškės town. It's the most problematic part of this road. Because it has lots of 1 level crossings. 1 part of road reconstruction in this town should start after a month or two. Waiting for that.

It says: "Dangerous section 2 km long"

Distance between Grigiškės and juction before Vilnius ~2 km is with speed limit 80, because of lots of idiotic pedestrians, who decides illegally to cross 2x2 road. Idiots...

Comming to Vilnius and approaching junction to A16 road. Speed limit just before Vilnius is 100

Vilnius

Last photo, because driving and taking pictures in a city is really dangerous. By the way - big zoom makes a feel, that Vilnius is located in the mountains

Thanks for your time

Great report!

Upgrading it to motorway shouldn't be too difficult... Add some shoulders and eliminate U-turns.

Hey, nice trip, Xmaster! First time I see Minsk (BY) on Lithuanian signs... those restaurants and the church are beautiful. What's the meaning of the signs with the big dots? I've never seen that:

Great report Xmaster! I'll post my pictures of A1 and A5 direction to Poland a bit later. Today I saw new speed limit signs for cars and trucks at PL/LT border Budzisko. Sad, I couldn't make a picture, because my battery was dead.

But is that border so needed there? Aren't we like one whole country already? What's the pointing of improving inner borders?
