Still though, even if you disregard all the cities in Zhejiang from being part of the Yangtze Megacity, you have a population of about 40 million within Shanghai, Suzhou, Wuxi and Changzhou. And that definition is also conservative. So its a though call, although I personally would put the PDR at more than 40 million actually. There is no reason not to include Hong Kong as far as I can tell. So 50 million is still conservative in that regard.

I am very well aware of that. I did follow some never-ending discussions on London vs. Paris (which one is bigger) or some other discussions. It is very hard indeed to define what a city is and what isn't. What is an urban area? A commuter area? A metro area? Especially given that development and urbanization patterns in China are very different from Europe and, especially, the US despite a popular misconception that 'cities in China start looking like in US'. They are anything but. In fact it can't be more opposite.

Which is why some time ago I did a little 'research' (I don't have it here but perhaps I could do that once again). Having been engulfed in a similar debate I decided to compare all major cities in a similar fashion using population and area numbers as well as Google Earth images for better visualisation (1:1 scale). It still doesn't answer those questions (it's probably not possible to answer them in a clearly defined manner anyway) but it gives a chance to compare all those cities in a similar fashion which helps to build a fairly good image of what we're talking about. There may still be questions unanswered but one thing that does become clear is that Chongqing is by no means a top league player (not yet anyway). Also that beyond any doubt the world's two biggest urban areas are Tokyo and the PRD. Some other conclusions rather surprised myself but this is not the right place for this kind of discussion I suppose. Is there a thread for this purpose i.e. discussing city definitions and sizes?

It would be great if moderators could move this discussion (or start a new one) because this is a very interesting topic worth more elaborate discussion.

Yes, I agree. Sorry for the off-topic, mods, but I would like to continue this discussion elsewhere (in a dedicated thread if one so exists) as it is very interesting. And if you were able to dig up any of the information you discovered from your research then that would be great as well.

Zhujiang NT is becoming one of the most impressive district of China, there are tons of interesting projects, stores with imported groceries and very nice residential high-rises, I am considering renting a flat over there because my job makes me stay in GZ 10 days per month at least and I am fed up with hotels. In any case it won't be more expensive than what I pay in HK.

Hitachi unveils world's fastest elevator
Quote:
Japanese electronics company Hitachi says it has developed the world's fastest elevator, with a speed of 1,200 meters per minute. The new model can ascend 95 floors in roughly 43 seconds.

The existing record-holder is an elevator installed in a high-rise in Taiwan that can travel 1,010 meters per minute.

Engineers at Hitachi achieved the ultra-high speed by developing a powerful motor. They have also made the cables 30 percent lighter.

The elevator uses double the normal number of vibration control devices to ensure that passengers feel comfortable.

Hitachi plans to install the model in a high-rise due to be completed in the Chinese city of Guangzhou in 2016. The 111-story building will be 530 meters tall.

Hitachi officials say China accounts for roughly 60 percent of global demand for elevators due to the country's high-rise boom. Rival elevator makers are competing there for market share.

Toshiyuki Ono, who heads the company's international elevator business, says demand for speed is growing in countries where many skyscrapers are under construction.

That can only be in this tower. Should be an interesting ride, going up that fast.

Wow, the one in the Canton Tower is incredibly fast, so having an even faster one (in the same city) is crazy.

72 km an hr,, that's impressive. Beats the heck outta Taipei 101, 60K,, Sh*@ they're both pretty fast, but the rooftop and actual floor count, it's needed more than T 101!
Hope GF117 gets Hitachi to do theirs.
