The twisting lights on the Canton Tower remind me of the Cayan Tower in Dubai.

They should renovate or build more traditional buildings, instead of high apartment blocks

the slums actually add character to a city, as long as the crime rate stays low and the health rates stay up.

It's not the slums that should stay, but it would be great if they would be replaced by new lowrises with high density instead of more flats. The problems with those flats is that they basically remove any feel of 'street life'.

I hope I am wrong, but this explosion of high rise apartment blocks in China reminds me a lot of the British post war boom in high rise construction.
The British model was painted as a utopia of modern living but ended up as a nightmare of deprivation which is now being systematically demolished in most cities.
Looking at the older buildings in these pictures reminds me of some of the rash planning decisions that were made in my country.
I hope China does not live to regret the breaking of ties with the past.

The reasons for the failure of highrise living in Britain were not to do with buildings themselves or 'bad' urban practices but with policies and general mentality. China's model of urban development is more comparable to that of Hong Kong or Singapore where highrise living dominates the urban landscape in cities. Therefore any comparison with Britain is absolutely irrelevant here.
