What on earth is that building at the centre of that last photo?
Is it really that tall and tin I didn't think that was possible, or is it a trick of the camera angle?

A parallelogram layout ( the corner/edge part of the building is likely where the emergency staircase or lift is located).

Another example ...

The Gateway (Singapore) (Wikipedia)

is it just the light or is the cladding different on each face of the facade?

In my opinion, Guangzhou (Canton) has already one of world's ten most impressive skylines.

Same here. I think it can easily rival Shenzhen and Shanghai.

I assure you that it's just the reflection of the sun on the vertical fins of the building. They are angled with 2 flats sides that are perpendicular to the window. On the left side of the cladding that is brighter, you see the flat perpendicular side of the vertical extensions, On the right side, you see the angular portion which blends in with the windows. The reflection of the buildings also adds to the brightness of the vertical fins rather then the reflection of the sky.

I swear, the Pinnacle and the Pearl Tower look as if they have been in the city forever! They just looks so right, in that spot.
