Wow. I remember Baiyun Airport to be already quite big and ultra-modern when I was there more than a year ago. But does it actaully make sense to have another huge airport so near to Chek Lap Kok? I mean we all know about the nature of the hub system... Hope it won't turn out as a billion-dollar-grave like several japanese airports.

Well considering the astronomic cost of adding a third runway att Chek Lap Kok as it soon will hit the limit of its two runways I think it's a good idea expanding Baiyun.

This is good. I think Guangzhou needs more expansion and maybe more runways.

Actually, Hong Kong is now running Zhuhai airport, so excess cargo flow is expected to go there instead.

How does this new phase look like overall, is it the same as phase 1 or totally new design?

No kidding, it looks halfway done! The updates are MUCH APPRECIATED.

Any news on the Shenzhen Airport expansion? That is another huge one in the Delta region. There is so much going on with Chinese aviation infrastructure right now it is difficult to keep track of.

I remember seeing renderings that looked as if the new terminal and concourses would blend seamlessly with the original, finishing off the symmetric design of the complex. If someone could repost them that would be great!

There doesn't seem to be any room for new runways. I would think a city like Guangzhou would need at least 4 to keep up for the next 20 years. Then again London Heathrow and Hong Kong both seem to do fine with two runways. Someone told me in another thread that 2 was OK because they handle mostly widebodies instead of A320s/737's and regional jets/turboprops like we see at large US airports with many more runways.

Don't forget this is china, they'll just bulldoze whatever is in the way of the runways. Baiyun is also a new airport and the masterplan has 4 runways so there are of cause space reseved for the airport.

I don't think it is bad for the expansion of the GZ Airport as there is no space for the international flights. Maybe this terminal expansion is for the international flights, where the current one would become domestic flights' terminal.

AMAZING!!!!!!! Do you know if there will be direct flights to London?

The longer I live in Guangzhou the more amazing things I see. China has a very bright future.

How many passengers will it be able to handle when completed?

I counted more than 150 bridged gate between 2 terminals, not even talking about other on the apron. That's crazy.
Will the airport be able to handle that much air traffic with only 2 runways and can the staff manage that much without any error?
