China Southern Airlines launches Guangzhou-Macau helicopter service
24 April 2015
Macau Daily Times Excerpt

Macau and Guangzhou now seem to be closer than ever as China Southern Airlines launched a helicopter service connecting the two cities. Still in its trial phase, the first flight departed from Guangzhou and arrived at the Macau Aviation Business Center last Friday.

Three flights had already been booked for the first day of operations, said Mr. Cui Guang, Director of the Logistics & General Aviation Development Department for Macau International Airport Company Limited (CAM).

China Southern Airlines Company Limited – Zhuhai Helicopter Branch Company, one of the main helicopter operators in the region - is providing the service. The Zhuhai Helicopter Branch is directly affiliated with China Southern Airlines, and currently owns 17 helicopters, also providing Asia’s largest S76 helicopter fleet, CAM said in a press release.

The flight from Guangzhou takes about 45 minutes and can carry up to 12 passengers.

Direct flight to link China's Guangzhou with Nairobi
Excerpt

NAIROBI, Apr.16 (Xinhua) -- A direct air route between China's Guangzhou and the Kenyan capital Nairobi is set to begin operation in August, the China Southern Airlines said Wednesday.

"African countries and China have established strong economic ties. The launch of a direct flight connecting Nairobi and Guangzhou will ease travel and promote trade," Li Dongliang, head of sales division of the airlines, told Xinhua in Nairobi.

He said the route is commercially viable given the huge number of Kenyans travelling to China for business and further studies.

Li said there will be three weekly flights that will cater for a large pool of passengers from the two cities. The flight will take 11 hours 15 minutes from Nairobi to Guangzhou and vice versa.

Lots of construction going on in/around the airport when I transited through in late Aug. Any news on when this will be completed?

Upper floor of the intl transit area (gates 100 and above) is quite nice. Everything is super expensive though - coffee, souvenirs, books, etc. I'll post some pics soon!

Why not just use a regional jet? Curious....

Also, are there still flights between CAN-HKG?

Macau is a very small city and may not have sufficient population for a regular flight.

Dragonair flies between Hong Kong and Guangzhou, which is meant for connecting traffic.

China's state-owned carriers sweep nation's first airport slot auction
Excerpt

SHANGHAI, Dec 31 (Reuters) - China's state-owned airlines were the biggest winners in the country's first auction for coveted airport landing slots, state media reported on Thursday, casting doubt over the effectiveness of efforts to reform the slot-assignment process.

China earlier this month said it would put slots for additional 2016 domestic flights at the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport up for sale, in a new move predicted to give smaller private airlines a fairer opportunity to prise some desired slots from dominant state-owned carriers.

The state-run China Daily newspaper said nine airport slots were sold on Wednesday to the country's four largest airlines and their affiliates, including China Eastern Airlines Corp , and units of Hainan Airlines, Air China and China Southern Airlines.

A statement from the Civil Aviation Administration of China issued on Wednesday said 34 airlines had taken part in the auction, which raised more than 550 million yuan in total.

"The auction was too expensive for us," the China Daily quoted a senior executive from an unnamed private carrier as saying.

Baiyun International Airport is planning to build its T3 terminal building before 2025, according tothe Guangdong Airport Authority. Besides, the construction of the 4th and 5th runways will also be kicked off before 2025.

Baiyun International Airport was opened on August 5, 2004.It underwent an expansion in 2012, which includes the third runway and the T2 terminal building. The third runway was completed in 2014, and the construction of T2 terminal is estimated to be completed by the end of this year.

Baiyun International Airport plays an important role in building Guangzhou into an aviation hub. It ihas three runways and one terminal building at present, operating 136 routes and 1000 flights daily to over 270 destinations on five continents.

In 2015, Baiyun International Airport was China’s third busiest airport and world’s 15th busiest airport by passenger traffic, serving more than 55 million passengers. As for cargo traffic, the airport was also the third busiest in China and the 18th busiest worldwide.

The expansion plan is to respond to the growing passenger and cargo flows in the future. With the whole project completed in the future, the airport will be able to handle 80 million passengers and 2.5 million tonnes of cargo a year.
