GE has update on Guangzhou and Baiyun airport recently. You can clearly see the phase II new terminals, 3rd runway and Fedex Baiyun Express Center are taking shapes

red boxes are new terminals. green is new runway, and yellow is where Fedex Baiyun Express Center locates

Anymore updates for this? I've heard there'll be 5 runways after the final phase!

Speaking of runways... The 3rd runway under construction seems pretty close to the current runways in operation... Will this 3rd runway be used for take-offs only?

Since the 16th Asian games will be held in Guangzhou, China from 12-27 November, 2010, Would Guangzhou Baiyun airport phase II construction finish before the game start ?

Dec 3rd 2008 - from the latest news, the 14 billion-yuan phase II has started. It includes the new runway (Runway III) and Terminal II construction. They'll be finished by 2010 before the Asian Games.

GZ govt estimates 2008 airport passenger will reach 33 million, the 2010 estimation is 40 million when runway III and Terminal II are finished.

The 4th and 5th runway will be finished by 2015 and 2020, when airport capacity climbs to 100million passenger and 6 million tons freight.

Damn, the plans look just crazy. What will be the capacity if all the stages are built? 120 million?

This is a very good thing. The population between the three cities, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hongkong, is probabley more than twice of that of the entire country of Canada. If you think of it this way, each of these cities really deserve a grand airport just to keep the traffic flowing.

Loving this airport. There's something about the grandness about Baiyun which few other Chinese airports exude, not even Beijing's T3.

So the terminal expansion is nearly complete, but construction on the 3rd runway is still in its infancy?
