Yes Akash, if design is repeated across whole mysore then it would be boring. What I suggest is to have heritage architecture around old mysore region. And have a new Mysore with modern architecture also. In Europe, say Bath in England the same architecture is repeated for every building, the rule is all buildings in a street should have the same look, same color, same size, etc. In mysore also we can identify different types of heritage architecture and repeat it for a street or so. The main railway station, airport, libraries, government buildings should have heritage architecture. Modern Mysore and Heritage Mysore should be easily be distinguishable.

Stop! wait for buses ends
Lawrence Milton, TNN 11 July 2009, 10:33pm IST

MYSORE: Now, you don't have to wait blindly at bus stands as movement of every city bus will be tracked through satellites. Thanks to the real
time passengers information (RTPI) system being adopted by the KSRTC in the city, passengers will get precise information of arrival and departure of buses on the boards displayed at bus stops.

Three private companies have completed the tryouts and the authorities are preparing to implement the project under the World Bank scheme.

Project director of a company, Vijay R, told Sunday Times of India this is the first of its kind system in the country.

Vijay said each bus will be fitted with the mobile data terminal (MDT) equipment which will transfer data from GPRS SIM card through satellite to the control room at the city bus stand. It provides details about the departure time and the exact location of buses and the KSRTC officers can monitor the vehicles at the control room.

Vijay said a 60-day trial run between the city bus stand and Chamundi Hill terminal was completed recently. Presently, the system is in practice in Ireland and Germany.

KSRTC divisional controller Srinivas said: "Three companies have conducted experiments and we are finalizing the project through tenders." They are plans to cover 200 buses and 100 bus shelters across the city, he added.

NWKRTC to run buses exclusively for women
TNN 16 July 2009, 11:17pm IST

HUBLI: Women who have been commuting on buses in the twin-cities may heave a sigh of relief, if North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation
(NWKRTC) has its way.

The corporation is toying with the idea of plying buses dedicated to women commuting between important destinations during peak hours. It has already started a trial run between City Bus Terminal (CBT) and Unkal area in Hubli since Wednesday.

NWKRTC divisional controller Omkareshwar said that at present one bus is plying between the two destinations for the benefit of office-goers and college students. The bus, with a lady conductor, is making two trips daily at 9.35 am and at 5 pm (from CBT).

NWKRTC chairman Mallikarjun Sahukar said the trail run was started following suggestions pouring in from Mahila Mandals and women commuters to start a special service on the lines of Nyaya Mitra, the bus service between Hubli and High Court Bench in Dharwad. However, he maintained that there were no complaints from women commuters about misbehaviour from men.

He said the suggestions for such a service has come from different parts of the twin-cities. "Earlier, we had planned to start a trial run between CBT and Vidyanagar as the stretch is dotted with educational institutions and offices. But following requests by Unkal area residents later, we extended the service up to Unkal," he said.

He said the facility will be extended to different parts of the twin-cities depending on the response to the trail run. Buses between Hubli and Dharwad, CBT to Gokul Road, Navanagar and Siddarooda Mutt are some of the potential routes, Sahukar said, adding that the trail run will continue for at least three months.

Half of passengers travelling by Bangalore pink BMTC buses are men. I doubt whether any lady conductor is powefull enough to ensure men not boarding women buses.

KSRTC plans to use bio-diesel for its vehicles
Bangalore, DH News Service:

The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is likely to shift from fossil fuel to bio-diesel mix by the end of 2010.

“There is a plan that has been put in motion to ensure that the 18,000 buses under the KSRTC will be shifted from fossil fuel to biodiesel with diesel or a higher mix of ethanol with diesel by end of next year,” said Bio-fuel Task Force, Chairman, Y B Ramakrishna here on Friday.

Currently, the KSRTC and BMTC are running 500 of their buses on bio-diesel blended with diesel, while the State Transport Corporation, in a separate initiative, has been running 1500 buses on a mixture of 7.7 percent ethanol with diesel.

Ramakrishna said KSRTC was in fact saving upto Rs 3.5 crore on fuel consumption under the pilot project.

“Performance wise, KSRTC has found that the mix of Biodiesel with diesel and the 7.7 percent addition of Ethanol with diesel has given them at least five miles more on the same amount of fuel,” the chairman said.

In a recent meeting held with the Indian Oil Corporation and other PSU Oil companies, the task force decided to upgrade the mix of ethanol to 10 percent from the current mix of 5 percent in fuel, in the State by October 2009. “We will try and push the project by August first week to ensure that it will be carried out all over the State,” said Ramakrishna.

Oil seed cultivation

The task force has identified 6,400 hectares of “degraded government land” in the rain fed areas of eastern districts in the State for oil seed cultivation.

Out of these, the task force has envisioned that 3,100 hectares of forest degraded land will be covered by bio fuel plantation activities.

The project will involve 96 villages forest committees (VFC’s) under the National Rural Employment Guaratnee Scheme. The remaining 3,300 hectares land will be covered by bio-fuel species with the involvement of 52 village forest committees under special development projects.

Tracking bus routes now at fingertips

Quote:
Satellite navigation, understood to be the core technology in global positioning systems (GPS) often used in slick automobiles, will now come to the aid of bus passengers.

Once in place, the endless wait for buses will soon be over, for the movement of every bus in Mysore city will be tracked through satellites.

In order to provide better amenities to passengers, particularly precise bus timings, the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) will adopt real time passenger information system (RTPIS), providing commuters with accurate information about the arrival and departure of buses on the electronic boards displayed at bus stops and also on the buses.

According to officials, the technology will not only be attractive but also an affordable option.

This is the first such project being implemented in the country. The project in Mysore is taken up on a pilot basis. The Union Urban Development Ministry has sanctioned Rs 22.5 crore under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission for the programme. All city buses in Mysore will be equipped with mobile data terminal equipment which will transfer data from GPRS SIM cards via a dedicated satellite to the control room at the city bus station. The equipment will provide details about the departure time and the exact location of buses. And KSRTC officers can monitor the vehicles in the control room. KSRTC managing director Gaurav Gupta told Deccan Herald here that a detailed project report for the scheme has been prepared and around 400 buses will be brought under the ambit of RTPIS.

Pilot basis

As the Centre is keen to modernise the urban transport system in the country, Mysore city has been selected on a pilot basis to implement this project, D Tangaraj, Principal Secretary, Urban Development Department, said.

Tangaraj, who met Union Ministry of Urban Development Secretary M Ramachandran here recently, said the project will not only help passengers but also provide better quality passenger services.

For a smooth ride
  • For the first time in the country, KSRTC will adopt Real Time Passengers Information System (RTPIS) in Mysore on a pilot basis
  • RTPIS will provide passengers precise information on arrival and departure of buses at bus stops and on the buses
  • Data transfer will be through satellite via GPRS SIM card and other data terminal equipment
  • 400 buses will be brought under the RTPIS
  • Union Urban Development Ministry has sanctioned Rs 22.5 crore under JNNURM

More low-floor buses for city
TNN 20 August 2009, 11:02pm IST

MYSORE: The city will get more low-floor buses, KSRTC managing director Gaurav Gupta said on Thursday.

Speaking at the interactive session on Synergizing Traffic and Hi-Tech Transportation here, he said the number of fleets of such hi-tech buses will be increased to 150. Presently some 50 such buses are operating on the city routes. This is to provide quality service to the people, added Gupta.

The Volvo buses have made a difference as people who used to travel in cars and other modes of transportation have switched over to the hi-tech buses reducing pollution and cutting down the traffic congestion, Gupta explained. The MD said in case of demand, KSRTC will extend bus services directly to international airport at Bangalore from the city.

To provide better transport and other infrastructure facilities in the city, KSRTC has undertaken various infrastructure development programmes under JnNURM project at a cost of Rs 110.16 crore. The inter model trasit centres (IMTCs) will be constructed at Kuvempunagar at a cost of Rs 18.40 crore; Yelwala at Rs 5.90 crore; Satagalli at Rs 35.07 crore and Chamundi Hills at Rs 3.75 crore. Latest technologies, like SMS alert system, GPS will be introduced in a phased manner, he said. Police commissioner Sunil Agrawal and CFTRI director V Prakash were present.

NWKRTC incurred Rs. 200 cr loss

Quote:
GULBARGA, AUGUST 27, 2009: Following loss of Rs. 200 crore by the North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC), the Karnataka Government has decided to conduct a study about revival plan of the NWKRTC by the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, (IIM-B).

The premier management institute would submit a revival plan to the Government.

Transport Minister R. Ashok told media persons here on Thursday that short term measures of the Government would help to revive the NWKRTC. Steps would be taken to turnaround the NWKRTC as a profit-making body such as Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), North Eastern Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC) and the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), the minister said

The IIM-B has been asked to come out with a revival plan which would make the NWKRTC a profit-making corporation, he said.

The NWKRTC has incurred loss of up to Rs. 200 crore in the past few years and it continues to incur huge losses. One of the reasons for the huge losses was movement of buses belongs to private operators in the region. The Government is considering the option of prohibiting the entry of private operators’ vehicles into the cities, he said.

The Government had decided to take action against the erring officials of the NWKRTC who were found to be responsible the corporation incurring losses. A former Managing Director of the NWKRTC and four other officials have been relieved from their duties pending inquiry, he said.

Under the centrally sponsored Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), the Centre had released funds for purchase of 1,000 buses for Bangalore city. A plan was prepared to submit to the Centre seeking extension of the JNNURM scheme to Gulbarga, Belgaum, Hubli and Davangere. Now, the scheme’s benefits are limited to Bangalore and Mysore cities.

The Minister arrived to Gulbarga to attend a Cabinet meeting. Earlier, protestors burnt a government bus in protest against the government apathy towards the daily wagers problems.

Smart cards for vehicle users in Gulbarga

GULBARGA: Karnataka’s Transport Department has decided to issue smart cards for vehicle users in Gulbarga. The smart card would contain driving licence and vehicle registration certificates. The smart card project will have contact details, photograph and blood group of the cardholder. The State government has launched the project in Bangalore two months ago.

Transport Minister R. Ashok, who launched the programme at the Regional Transport Office here on Thursday, said smart card holder would be eligible for a life insurance of Rs. 1 lakh in the case of death in an accident and Rs. 50,000 if s/he suffers permanent physical disability in an accident.

The Minister called upon the people of Gulbarga district to take advantage of the facility. The National Informatics Centre had provided the software for the smart chip inserted in the smart card. The details incorporated in the smart card would be available online across India.

The Government is mulling upon the idea of distributing 1,000 smart card readers to the police stations across the State, the Minister said. The system would help to reduce theft cases as well as misuse of documents.
