So do I.The panels on the side wall appear to be opaque, you cannot see through them.

Just curious... does this block the view of Central Park from Top of the Rock?

Someone might be able to help me understand better, but as of right now I'm not enthralled by the top of this tower in any way, shape or form.

I've no delusions about universal tastes or traditional pinnacles, etc, but it sure seems to me the cap to this structure is almost a complete afterthought. Clearly they were going for somthing that sinks into the sky, almost to appear invisible at certain angles/times. But the general form, the cladding, and the organization of the columnal masses feels weak to me. Why this shape? Why the breaks at those particular points (for an otherwise monolithic form)? Why the subtle (non)statement to crown your tower, which otherwise strikes a grand pose in a prominent vista?

Maybe I'm too jaded about any glass-enshrouded skyscraper and the dynamism of this tower escapes me, but as a fan of NYC I fail to see this as an artistic addition. Another tall building, to be sure, but hardly worth noticing on the architectural radar in this setting.

What am I missing, if anything?

hm, I must say I've seen better ones. This does not show views from inside out or interiors and is rather short.

What you're asking is why this tower wasn't designed to your specific liking. The answer to the question should be obvious.

Actually I was looking for fans of the building to offer what they like about it apart from the generic "So beautiful!" etc. I'm serious in wishing to hear favorable critiques of the design for comparison.

I am a fan of the building in general, and I don't think there has to be a logical justification for every angle and curve in the design... It is meant to evoke a free-standing waterfall above the NYC skyline, which I think is a creative and fun idea, if a bit non-contextual.

But I agree with you about the top of the building, especially on the side facing Central Park, as visible in the photo below. That grilled-off section really breaks up the aesthetic for me. It may have been an engineering necessity, but I still find it disappointing.

I like this building, but I don't really love it. I like the cladding and the structure before it reaches the top. I don't like the curvy top, I think that this building would look better if it had more right angles
