Nothing anyone can do but keep area below clear. It's a long way down and another crane collapse 4 years ago from 400 feet up literally crushed a townhouse.

Holy crap!!! I just saw it on the news I think it is dangling on top of the building. We haven't gone through the strongest winds that are expected

The boom shouldn't fall, it's still attached at the pivot points, the cables holding it vertical seem to have snapped.

Why would they leave the crane up there?

firefighters trying to determine if can remove, but given the wind they doubt it, they would need to mount another crane up there, nearly impossible at this point as the weather deteriorates.

I've seen this a couple of times, but never at this height. One in Perth Australia not so long back, and one in Melbourne about 7 years ago. Both were brought down by mobile cranes. The one in Melbourne was the same as this one. Saved what they could but the deck was written off due to stress. It took a few days to cut the boom which had to be held by mobile. Can't see a chopper hovering for hours. I wish them well.

Surely someone locked this in place rather than weather-vaning it? I thought most booms can withstand pretty strong wind if they are left unlocked and allowed to turn into it.

firefighters are just waiting for it to fall, they can't stabilize it given conditions and too risky. they're evacuating surrounding buildings. wind gusts up there 100+ mph !

Tower section won't come down neither will deck, all massively mounted in place. Boom is probably pretty safe now as well as it's designed to stay tied in place in the event it fails like this.

I think the overhyping they did with irene, made people think Sandy is another overhyped natural scenario and made people do false decissions.
