That sounds even more dangerous, yet it's hard to think of another way to get that thing down, I guess it's their only choice.

If anything it was really irresposible of the constrution company if they didn't secure the crane as they should have.

Round-up of the crane collapse photos; can hear the wind roaring through the chimney here in the West Village!

It's engineered to hold up a certain load at an angle over the white mast sections so technically speaking it can hold the load of the boom. But that doesn't mean the points that hold on the boom aren't completely destroyed. Those winds are up to 125 MPH up there, I have a feeling it will stay on and whip around up there around the mast, but lets hope it just falls so no one has to risk there life taking it down, how ever they will do it (helicopter?)

Aren't there high-rises that were built in Hong Kong or Shanghai or anywhere else there was a cyclone? What an embarrassment for whatever mob-controlled firm put up that crane.

Now everybody in America know about this building. Just wish it was because of a better reason.

My friend who is a 14 Operator Engineer (NYC Local) said: I guarantee you will see another one being jacked up on the same building to demob that rig.

I would have thought it should of had the brakes released for weather vaning. I don't think it'll drop, but depends what sort of wind is heading that way. One option could have been to climb if down 10 sections, but that again could have caused more damaged if it sliced into the building. If they had locked it off to protect the building from damage in the event of this, then they've had a little win. Did they have the boom at the right angle? Lots if questions

I doubt they will send someone up there, don't forget you need a crew of iron workers on the mast to jack it down and a operator in the cab and I don't think any iron worker would ever go up there with the boom hanging off it.

Lol not for awhile! The dept. of buildings is going to have a field day on this one!!

Well lets just hope it does not fall...best case scenario at this point is it continues hanging until they can get a crew up there safely.

Wow! That's scary! Hope it won't fall down so nobody will get hurt.

Since it is already topped out, how many works need to be done that requires crane to finish it?

Oops.

Hopefully it doesn't do too much damage when it falls down with even more storm coming up.

ABC News reported that they gave up securing the crane and they can't do anything till storm passes by.
