This is getting from bad to worse

Quote:
A Town Residential executive, who has a direct view of the site from his home, heard a “snap” and saw the crane dangling, according to Town manager Wendy Maitland. He called the police, who arrived on the scene within 15 minutes, but he continues to hear creaking and “very disturbing” noises, she said.

Notice that the crane boom is actually doubled over backwards hanging off the back of the counterweights so the whole structure is seriously out of balance now...this is going to be a nightmare to dismantle...all a 1000 ft above one of the busiest streets in Manhattan...57th will need to be closed for some time...going to cost big $$$$ money to get sorted out...some principles involved are having a really bad day

Has the building itself taken any damage other than windows and the crane.

NY1 (local TV news station) reports that two FDNY engineers are scaling the building to assess the situation!

That's hard to assess just by videos and photos taken from other buildings

At least it wasn't nearly as bad as when Taipei got hit with an earthquake when T101 was under construction...

What an amazing turn of events. I hope the worst doesn't happen. I can't imagine all the damage that could happen if it falls. A lot of lawsuits could be coming.

They couldn't remove the boom because there is no other crane up there to do it. Having watched the footage it is clear the crane is locked off and can't slew. As I said before this might have been done to prevent the boom from hitting the building in the event if this happening if it was left to slew. But the tower crane itself is square to the building, so the load will be evenly spread unlike 432 park where the crane sits at an angle which I don't really get. I know the city has a love hate relationship with New York Crane/Lomma. This won't help.

i think pinnacle owns this crane.

my guess is that the load line was not lashed to the structure. you will notice that they lashed the lines at WTC and with conventional cranes.

Yes. Looks like pinnacle. Job did start with a NYC crane. In any case, this will be a big save. Maybe they thought the steel would act as buffer of some sort. I wonder if they had the what happens if the boom does go over talk.
