That photo from up by Central Park North is interesting, 'cause after seeing some of those helicopter videos, I started wondering how awesome the views would be looking south from a skyscraper or even a supertall built in that area. But that will have to wait until perceptions of that as a "sketchy" area crime-wise change. Yes, the crime rate has gone down dramatically in the last 20 years, but it's probably not time yet.

BTW, I came across the photo below on Flickr, and it reminded me that neither the Essex House nor Hampshire House are landmarked buildings. I wonder if anyone would ever try to build a supertall between One57 and the Park. Probably unlikely, though, as both of the buildings in front of One57 have recently seen big investments, and Essex House was recently sold several times.

Imo it would be a bigger loss to see the Essex and Hampshire House demolished than the Drake hotel. I don't think anyone will be happy with that.
Btw, there is a tower proposed at east 93rd Street and it will have 50 floors.
The highest building now is only 172m.

There is some development, althought obviously not quite that much yet. The 20 story building that is on the left edge of the photo was completed within the last 5 years. And there's also 111 Central Park North, which is another building that was completed recently.

Surprised no one mentioned it, crane was lowered onto a flatbed yesterday in middle of rush hour at 4:30 pm, and no they didn't close 57 th street. Drove buy in my bus and when I seen it coming down was waiting for the street to be closed....whew.....

Good news on the crane removal. Hopefully the cladding will be done in two months or so.

I thought the Hampshire House in particular was already landmarked. I agree that losing either building would be sad, but it's not likely that either one will be removed any time soon.

This map has the landmarked buildings in the area indicated:

You can use the map at the link below to see landmarks. Zoom in as desired and use "landmarks" in the right portion of the screen.

Thanks!

I've always been wondering, why is the Hudson river jam-packed full of collapsed and abandoned wood piers? <Seinfeld voice> What's the deal with that?

How old is that pic? There doesn't seem to be much progress with the removal of the crane.

I've always thought it was sort of a waste to face the cascade away from the park.

I suppose, really, that design would be ideal if placed directly against the park and facing it.
