Beekman is more massive, but about 30 m lower.

This pic really shows the immense size of midtown. 157 is barely visible even though it's the second tallest building in Midtown. In my opinion the best angles to view 157 are from Central Park and from the upper west coast of Midtown (North to the Hudson Yards)

I have to say this pisses me off! WTF do these people want? What happened was caused by the act of god. Many people/ properties suffered damages because of the Hurricaine. They are not the only people that suffered but you have to allow things to continue to rebuild in order to move on. It's 1 day plus $1,500! Go use that $$ and go to the nicest Hotel and pamper themselves. It is 1 day of headache. Just sacrifice for the sake of advancement.

Fine, evacuating after a short notice is a nuisance, so both parties should just agree to do this at a later date to give residents enough time to prepare. Everyday this drags on will only mean for more costly fees the co-op will dish out for attorney's time.

Message to co-op! save your money, don't raise your maintenance on residents to pay for litigation, take the $$, sacrifice 1 day next week and move on.

Lawsuit seeks to block installation of new One57 crane
http://therealdeal.com/blog/2013/05/...w-one57-crane/

Quote:
A Midtown co-op is suing to stop Extell Development from installing a new crane boom to the top of its One57 condominium project, which would required a one-day evacuation of the building, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The co-op board of Alwyn Court on 58th Street filed a lawsuit yesterday seeking to halt both the crane installation and the evacuation.

The city Department of Buildings ordered the evacuation to begin Friday night and the installation to take place Saturday. The crane has to be raised above two apartment buildings and an office property.

Marc Luxemburg, an attorney for the Alwyn Court board, claims that the DOB lacks the power to order an evacuation on behalf of Extell because there’s no emergency.

Board president Paul Matus told the Journal that his board is negotiating with Extell to get more insurance and compensation for Alwyn Court before the work begins.

As reported, the developer offered up $1,500 to each residence inside the Alwyn as compensation.

“We hope we can work this out amicably to see to the completion of the building,” an Extell spokesperson told the Journal, “as the safest building is a completed building.”

Yeah, that's pretty funny. I just spent less then $1500 to take my entire family(4 people) on a 5 day cruise to the Caribbean. It sounds like somebody greedy is trying to cash in. $1500 a day is more then enough compensation for a day away from your home, especially under the circumstances if something were to go wrong lifting that boom up there. Give me $1500 a day, and you won't see me or my family for a few days. I'll even call after 3 days to make sure everything is safe for return Like you said, for $1500 a day, you can get a pretty nice hotel a 1/4 mile away and pamper the shit out of your wife and kids.
Ridiculous if you ask me

There is a 60% chance of rain and thunderstorms on Saturday, and the winds may be a little strong too. So they might end up having to postpone anyway.

I couldn't agree more. And in case they have to postpone due to the weather, they may end up paying this multiple times.

The chance of rain/thunderstorms is now 80%, but:

Residents Evacuate Co-ops So That a New Crane Boom Can Rise At One57
http://observer.com/2013/05/resident...rise-at-one57/

Quote:
Despite the rainy, windy weather that is set to hit New York tomorrow and a last-minute lawsuit filed to stop Extell from evacuating two co-op buildings adjacent to One57, plans to repair the crane broken during Hurricane Sandy are still moving forward Saturday morning.

Which means that the unfortunate residents of Alwyn Court, the landmarked building at the corner of Seventh Avenue and 58th Street, will either vacate the building voluntarily in the next few hours or face forcible eviction. The crane repair involves swinging a boom over Alwyn and two other buildings before hoisting it up the side of the unfinished tower.

This link includes a video newscast showing the boom beginning to be lifted off of the street:

Crane Returns To Top Of Luxury Condo Project Over 6 Months After Sandy
http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2013/05/...s-after-sandy/

Quote:
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A huge metal crane that was toppled by Superstorm Sandy and left hanging precariously over the road was finally going back up Saturday.

As CBS 2’s Janelle Burrell reported, more than 100 families have been forced out of their apartments for the reinstallation of the crane at the top of the building that will become the One57 luxury condo tower, at 157 W. 57th St.
[...]
The new crane was being hoisted up from the ground as of the 9 a.m. hour, but crews were struggling with high winds.
