Another good thing is that our "modern" buildings will one day be as old as the Empire State Building is now, and tourists would come all over the world to see buildings like One57, while other cities would probably keep today's megatalls but demolish all the other buildings. And some suburban areas like Changsha would thrive from mountainous rural areas to megacities.

But New York is unique, and it always will be.
Most of the buildings going up are replacing either nondescript buildings or are on lots that were already vacant before anything was thought of being put there (like this instance with the Drake Hotel)...I wish we could get final closure on this, because much of the early talk was that the hotel had been demolished loooong before this developer purchased that parcel.

I've been so confused about this.

Nondescript buildings make up New York, surprisingly, and the supertalls just add a bit of height to the New York Skyline. I wonder how long it will take for New York to get a megatall.

Eventually, some architect will get the nerve to build higher than One World Trade Center (if the spire is counted, of course, and if not, Nordstrom Tower, 432 Park Avenue, and a few others will be already surpassing One World Trade Center.) Speaking of new projects in New York, can someone name a few?

After an architect builds higher then we'll be closer to getting a megatall. But I guess it'll take some time because One World Trade Center is the replacement for the Twin towers and everything symbolic that goes with that.

Does the height limit restrict people from building a megatall? If that's the case nothing I say applies.

For New York projects see my sig (New York Supertalls). In Midtown we will see towers rise which are taller than 1WTC, mostly likely at Hudson Yards / West Side / Manhattan West / MSG. There's enough space there.

Downtown doesn't look that good, because of 1WTC's 'iconic' status. Noone would dare to challenge it heightwise. We already had a similar discussion with the 22 Thames Street proposal, where developers wouldn't go for the maximum height because 'it would interfere with the WTC'. It's ridiculous and tells you a lot about the taboo of building taller than the WTC. Sure, it will change in the future (out of need mostly), but as I said for now we won't see anything tall (400m+) rise in Lower Manhattan.

Nice perspective. Hudson Yards is going to be taller than 1,776 feet?

No, the North Tower will be 1,337 feet, which is 3 feet higher than 1WTC's actual roof. The parapet takes it up another 34 feet.

Nice photos. Doesn't look like much progress has been made in the past week.

They're working around the clock now, right? Maybe now it'll be clad as fast as a Chinese building of the same size.

Relax, the exterior should be finished by the end of this year. It'll just take a while longer to finish up the interior work.
