I always thought the shape was to represent a periscope overlooking central park.

Well, it wasn't. I understand that you're new, so I'll explain it to you. It was meant to represent a waterfall. Especially the east and west side at the bottom.

Or was it a joke?

Not a joke, just the the very top to me seems very much like a periscope.

I understand the bottom looking like a waterfall with the waves in the cladding/glass and it being blue in colour.

You're visiting in January? I live in New York. One 57's cladding will probably be done by January. Maybe not, but if it isn't, it'll be really close.

It is really just that dark, it doesn't have any protective covering on it because if it did it would look much more saturated in color like the protected panels near the entrance and crane.

Don't be disappointed, guys. IamtheSTIG said that the dark patch made it resemble a waterfall. Look at this photoshop by tim1807.

It gradually gets lighter, like a waterfall.

I didn't like the renderings for this building at all, but I love the way it turned out!

I think it resembles a mistake. Otherwise the building is pretty nice. (Nice photoshop job too).

Are those top glass panes so dark because they still have protective coatings on them?

At first I thought about that, but I have been literally in front of the building and noticed the protective coating on the glass on some parts of the building. All the coating did at least from my observation was it made the glass just look duller and it did not have the effect of being darker compared to sections of glass that did not have the coating.

I really think that dark blue unfortunately is part of the design. I just think it is something we will get use to.

The building it supposed to represent a waterfall, the water on top is darker due to it being deeper, then as it drops over the 'curve' it all separates and spreads out to form a sort of spray which has a lighter tone, and the further away from the main bit of falling water it is, the paler it gets

quite a clever idea the architect has come up with
In such a small area? It kinda ruins the (side) waterfall effect if you ask me.

The only thing for me is that it is a sudden line between dark blue and light blue, instead of a smooth transition.

I'm so disappointed about the darker glass but Tim's edited photo does make it look a lot better.

Wow. You make really great photoshops. I might be considering posting this for my 500th post instead of a picture of One World Trade Center, and the photoshop has to be pretty good to get between me and my favorite building.

And what a coincidence. This is my 450th post, and I'm posting your photoshop right now. Ooh- there's writing on the wall!

BOOO!!!.... and sorry for being such a baby, but i honestly feel better now..
