in case anyone didnt hear. there was an issue with the crane today while they were load testing it at its new height.

the generator gave up and caused a bit of a fracas (sandy crane - almost exactly a year ago now)

That stupid box:

Quote:
UPDATE 1:50 p.m.: The box is hanging about 20 stories above the street, and crews are still working to bring it down. West 57th Street is still closed between Sixth and Seventh Avenues. Michael Gross, who lives nearby and was evacuated during the Hurricane Sandy debacle, sent the above photo.

UPDATE: 4:10 p.m.: Around 3:30 p.m., the FDNY tweeted that the "unstable load" is "under control." The Times reports that "by late Monday afternoon" the concrete load had been lowered and 57th Street reopened.

I don't see an obvious place to install a derrick or small crane to remove the tower crane. If I'm not mistaken, the setbacks near the base of the crane's tower have already been clad, as well as the roof (where the previous derrick was located). I doubt the BMU is beefy enough to remove this crane. At least I've never seen a BMU remove a tower crane before.

I've also been wondering how they would remove that crane. So I did some math. Turns out any 500t mobile crane could remove it if it lowers itself to somewhere around 50 ft above the setback.

I think so. After that, a large crane could dismantle it from ground level.

All is required is probably a 100t with extended jib. They'll take the tower crane's jib, boom, machine deck, A frame, cabin, winches, mast, counter weights, slew ring in sections. Doesn't require an hefty crane capacity. Just the required capacity at radius and height.

Also someone should check road closing permits to see when the crane will be taken down.

A pump malfunction caused the crane to seize up with that heavy load: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...668092496.html

don't remember Carnegie 57/155-157 west 57th street being proposed at 1300 ft.
Maybe that was something else that was proposed earlier, or it was before I even began lurking here

This looks like a bad design. Good thing it went through revisions to look like the masterpiece it does now. Could anyone show us the revisions it went through?

Bad Design? The design is beautiful and elegant. Probably my favorite design (if not height) of the U/C Supertalls right now

Oh, sorry, I meant the first pic that Hunser posted. The actual building is one of the best designs I've ever seen.

Facebook Billionaire Mark Zuckerberg's Quietly Expanding Real Estate Collection
http://www.forbes.com/sites/morganbr...ate-portfolio/

Quote:
On the East Coast, rumors have also bubbled up among New York City-based luxury brokers that the Westchester, N.Y.-native may be the anonymous buyer behind the upper duplex penthouse atop glass megalith One57 in midtown Manhattan. That pending sale tops $90 million, a sum likely to set a new record for the city when it closes. The 10,923-square foot condo spans the 89th and 90th floors of the up-and-coming tower constructed by Extell Development.

To date, no sales data has been released regarding the unit in One57 and a company spokesperson will say only that “Extell Development Company does not confirm nor deny any speculation about potential buyers.”

Facebook, too, has declined to comment on any of the alleged sales.
