Cityspire is in the middle (I think that's how Tim dated the photo to 1987). Not so sure about the one on the right.

...man, what a strange photo to photoshop this into. On top of the cropped out ESB and WTC, just look at how different Columbus Circle looks, or how empty midtown feels without BofA, NYT or 4 Times Square.

That's indeed how I got it, and indeed, the Time Warner Center was a big improvement.

The tower to the right is the 191m/628ft Central Park Place. Finished in 1988.

Are you talking about the tall glass building in the foreground that sweeps towards the street at the base? I admire that building every time I see it.

Yeah, that's the one -- the Solow building (I can't tell if "Sorrow" was autocorrect or a joke, but either way pretty funny). Apparently it has some of the highest office rents in the whole city. Quality building with ludicrous views.

I actually didn't much care for it when I first saw it, but it's steadily grown on me. It has a counterpart near Grand Central, that has that same gentle slope near the base, doesn't it? Anyone know the name of that one?

Is it the W R Grace Building you're talking about? It's on 6th & 42nd.

Yeah! That's the one, thanks. Never knew what it was called. Is there any real connection between the two, like same architect, or was that just a style from that era? In any case, in that shot down 57th you can see how Solow and One57 complement each other's shapes. Solow's downward slope is like a mirror inverse of One57's upward sloping roof.

Edit: found a quick Wikipedia explanation -- "This is similar to another of Bunshaft's creations, the Solow Building, which is no coincidence, as he had used the initial, rejected façade design for that building in his design for the Grace Building."

Yup, it was a joke. I love giving nicknames to absolutely everything arround me since I was a small kid

Btw, I agree that it is a very elegant and beautiful building. It was the first building that caught my eyes when I saw the Central Park skyline for the first time. Btw, in Bratislava there is a nearly identical building, only half as tall and without the tapering facade:

I read recently in an article that the residential rules were very strict in this apartment block, including restrictions of noise (no singing!?) from 11pm + and other descriptions.

for an ultra expensive apartment block this makes me question the construction and sound proofing, I know for a fact that the construction of One Hyde Park for example had lots of emphasis on sound proofing (you could host a party there easily without disturbing your neighbours) which is something I'd expect at this price range?

It's so beautiful! I wish the Mirante do Vale could have the glass like it.

And Mirante do Vale is the tallest building in Brazil.

It used to have a not that good looking facade but it was reclad 5 to 10 years ago. Here is the original facade that it had before the reclad:

But it's better than Mirante do Vale.

Yeah, both are nice, but I think I like the original a little better to be honest.
