Can't wait to see this rise up and add to the already astounding skyline of New York, Manhattan.

Since they're on the first floor already, I'm wondering where the hell the core is?

I edited a bit aerial shot an noticed 3 holes on the street level floor..All 3 holes are on the side where's the tallest part of the tower..

Somewhere where those holes are, there has to be the core..

I hope we'll see it when they pour that part of the first floor...

Why didn't they just buy those two buildings up there and make it a nice square?

Barnett has stated that he tried to do so, but the owners would not sell.

This one kind of just happened; right? Dont' you feel like just a few months ago we were all in the depths of a recession and reading apocalyptic articles in the papers about the end of the world and banks failing left and right, and businesses shuttering because there isn't a loan to be had anywhere in the world.

And then, somewhere around the start of Summer, Barnett writes an op-ed piece about how the only way out of a recession is new development, at least in New York, and that they are planning to build this tower.

Fast forward a few short months, and voila, we're upto and even passed the street level. I mean, this is not a twelve story building on the outskirts of Queens. This is a major tower, a supertall that will define our skyline and yet, the whole approval process seemed to be that of a non descript, average, squatty buildings planned for some suburb in "god knows where, america".

I wonder if this has to do with the politics or the fact that Extell, in this case, had worked out all the details (approvals, community boards, landmarks commision, city council whatever) before revealing the plans to build this. But, I sure do wish that all development was this smooth and pleasant in New York.

They've played it smart the whole way to this point, even down to keeping the building's appearance a secret until it was actually under construction.

Extell had all the clearances and then got financing from a UAE sovereign wealth fund. If they had to use normal banking channels, this thing would still be a hole in the ground. Other projects await bank financing and banks want anchor tennants up front. It's going to be a long slog for them.
