How well-known is this by the NY public compared to the WTC towers?

18 floors done..Looks like they started to place PERI wind screens on the south (w57th street) side..Wind screens will hide 4 floors so we should be more careful with floor counts..

Dan also asked why is this white crane part filled with steel rods..
They can do 2 things:
First, they can use it to lift rods..A bit strange and unsafe because they have all kind of ropes and things which are made for lifting..
Or second, maybe they placed them in that crane part because it's easier to sort them since there are different types of rods..Down are thicker rods with holes in them, and up are thiner full rods..Crane part also holds them in the air so they are safe from moisture and rust..
As I know this crane part is there for a week now..
We'll see..

It's not even close to the WTC Towers..WTC stole all the fame in NY right now..
But watch it when it brakes skyline from the Central Park and continue to rise..It will be noticed soon..

Windscreens are there to protect workers..It's some kind of fence around the tower..They also protecting workers from strong winds high up in the air..It's something similar to blue netting on the WTC towers..They also have catwalks so workers can easily walk and work..

I am guessing you don't really need the wind screens for the workers - if you did, why wouldn't WTC1 and other tall buildings use them?

Maybe they some how need them because of all the wood work they have to do to create the wooden forms for the concrete?

WTC towers have blue netting which is very similar to those windscreens..
Both, blue netting and windscreens have catwalks to make easier walking and working for workers..On WTC workers use catwalks to weld steel, and here workers use catwalks to build wooden forms, etc.

if you were on the empire state building you know for what that things are. i dont know how cold it is on 300feet, but i know that on 1000 feet its ******* cold. espexially carnegie 57 whould be the first "high skyscraper" after the central park. the empire state building platform is "only" on ca. 1050feet

People NYC really don't care about what's being built around them. The people in area know about if that answer your question.

Man, this tower IS a mess with the floor count. Diagram progress is suspended for now. Dino, could you post your diagram just to take a look?

I read a lot more than I post, but I found myself near the site so I decided to snap a pic and upload it here. This is from today and the other is from the park, which shows truly how tall this building will look from the ground.
