LA's little sister Long Beach

Yep I decided to get off my lazy behind and go and take some photos after a break from the rain.

As you can see many photographers were thinking the same thing. We all had hoped to get photos of the snowcapped mountains. But the clouds hadn't cleared away from them just yet.

In the background is one of our oil refineries located in Carson.

That is LA's Wilshire Center skyline in the far background some 20 plus miles away.

The huge white building in the middle (Long Beach Memorial) is one of three largest hospitals in the city of Long Beach.

Sadly, I don't get to spend too much time in Long Beach when I'm in LA. All I know about Long Beach is that there are a lot of asian gangs there.

Just read a thing about LB in Circa yesterday.

The Aquarium gets nice notices and the Queen Mary is a hotel with 300 staterooms for staying in and a few shipboard restaurants to boot! The self tours can be scary though, as they play up the ghost reputation the ship has.

The creepiest room is actually the indoor swimming pool, which is dark and has a marble echo to it. If that wasn't enough, they play sound effects of children splashing around and walking with wet footprints on the floor. Some kids can't handle it.

Well there is more to LBC than asian gangs. I know gangs are here as is any big american city. But its not like its something that stands out, but again I'm not out looking for trouble.

I haven't been to Downtown L.B. in years but I have been to my favorite spot down there a few times called Belmont Shore.

2009 Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach

The 35th annual Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach roared into town on April 16-19, with household names like Danica Patrick, Will Power and Marco Andretti blazing through the streets in finely-tuned ethanol burning rockets. The turns were tight and the straightaways were fast, which resulted in a few fender-benders and a fiery crash or two.

Along with the world-class Indy Cars there were other races, including the Firestone Indy Lights, Team Drifting, Speed World Challenge and the American Le Mans Series that pits state-of-the-art BMW's, Acuras, Porsches etc. against one another. Huge crowds filled the stands on Sunday for the final event and were treated to some beautiful weather and intense competition as Dario Franchitti's Target car took the big prize.

Female driving sensation Danica Patrick received a lot of interest from the fans and media and managed to come in fourth place among the other superstar competition. Her popularity was displayed by fans wearing her colors and a huge trailer selling her swag exclusively that had fans lining up to take a photo next to her image on the side. One thing about Danica and other Indy Car racers is that they are accessible and very accommodating with the fans, stopping to take photos and sign autographs whenever they mingled among the masses.

Helio Castroneves joined the pack on Saturday for his first race in several months after being acquitted of tax evasion hours earlier.

Being LAist, we had to check out the food court and it was incredible. Massive hot dogs, pastrami sandwiches and giant portions of curly fries and onion rings kept the crowd well satisfied. With sponsors like Tecate and Patron, you KNOW there was plenty of booze to drink. photos Michael Zampelli

Nice pictures. Some pictures of DT LB would be nice too. I was very impressed by the outdoor street life and clubs. The Madison and Opera restaurants are converted bank buildings with a real 1930's NY feel and very decent food; outdoor blues clubs and ethnic restaurants, etc. Quite a change from the gang and drug days of 20 years ago.
