The great state of Delaware
My home state of Delaware is the second-smallest state in the United States, but even though it is small and thus forgotten and ignored, there are many great cities, towns, neighborhoods, buildings, and other places in the state worth seeing. On top of my Daily Delaware thread, I will be using this thread to show off the wonderful state of Delaware. A new city, town, region, or neighborhood will be shown at the top of every page. I will occasionally post "fillers" at the bottom of pages. These fillers will be a diverse showcase, and could be about a particular building, a theme, or other interesting history.
I hope that you enjoy this thread and see how nice of a place our little state is! |

The Green is Dover's colonial city center. The Green was laid out in 1717 as specified by William Penn's orders in 1683. Besides being the place where Delaware became the first state, The Green has seen other colonial events, such as the gathering of Delaware troops during the Revolutionary War, and the reading of the Declaration of Independence to Delawareans.
The Old State House is located on the eastern end of The Green. The State House was built in 1791 and served as the state's capitol building until 1933. The State House is still used as a museum and is the second-oldest state capitol that is still used in some function (behind only Maryland's capitol). ![]() ![]() ![]() The Golden Fleece Tavern, on the corner of The Green and State Street, is a re-creation of the original Golden Fleece Tavern, which was torn down in 1830 to make room for the Capitol Hotel. The current Tavern was built in the 1920s when the Capitol Hotel was demolished. The Golden Fleece Tavern is where ratification of the Constitution by the Legislative Council took place, on December 7, 1787, making Delaware the first state. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Kent County Courthouse ![]() Located right near The Green is Legislative Hall, Delaware's current state capitol building. Legislative Hall was built in 1933 and was designed to fit in with the old Colonial-style capitol and with Delaware's colonial history. ![]()

HAHA Dover does not belong in the urban showcase due to the fact there is nothing urban to the city. Post pics of Willimington at least it actually has a skyline.

Don't worry, he's only kidding. He goes to school in Dover, if I'm correct. If you're not an urban junkie, then Dover is a pretty boring place. Dover can be a pretty boring place even if you are an urban junkie; the city population is only 25,000 or so, including the annexed suburbia.
There will be much smaller places shown in this thread, since I'll be covering all of Delaware, so Dover isn't the "worst" that you'll see.

Xzmattzx, this is a fantastic idea for a thread, and you have shown us some brilliant examples of Colonial Georgian architecture. I look forward to more! I am glad to hear Wolfhound is only kidding....

The Delaware thread has begun!
Beautiful historic buildings on this page. Someday I'm going to start an Ontario thread on here, since I've already photographed probably 50 towns and cities but haven't shown most of them on this forum. |

I was kind of wondering if you would ever do that, since you've been to many places in Ontario. I hope that you eventually start it up. |

Flar, if we are allowed to put in requests I'd love to see Cambridge/Galt, Paris and St Mary's!

Well, I've got my dibs in for those if possible! I am determined to visit a few of those places next summer. I am particularly interested in Galt/Cambridge... it seems to be my kind of place.
