SJU | San Juan International Airport

Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport - San Juan, Puerto Rico

Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (TJSJ/SJU) is a public airport located in Carolina, Puerto Rico, 7 miles (11 kilometers) southeast of Old San Juan, and 3 miles (5 kilometers) west of Hato Rey (San Juan's CBD). The airport receives over 10 million passengers per year making it the busiest airport in the Caribbean, and it is owned and managed by the Puerto Rico Ports Authority.

The airport is among the top 50 U.S. and among the top 100 worldwide in terms of moving passengers and cargo, and is also the hub of air transportation in the Caribbean.

Manages more than 500 daily operations (takeoffs and landings), with international flights to Europe, North America, South America, Central America and the Caribbean region.

The airport has two runways, one 10,000 feet (3,049 m) and divergent 8,000 feet (2,443 m) long, shooting a parallel track that connects north and south runways, three passenger terminals with 42 aircraft parking positions (gates). In addition, it has three terminals for cargo handling.

Also, the airport has a modern and comfortable hotel with 125 rooms, a chapel, a bank, beauty salon, spa, shops, restaurants, parking, car rental companies and many other services that provide the comfort and enjoyment of traveler.

The Luis Muñoz Marín Airport has one main terminal building with four concourses and a new terminal building which will have one concourse.

The landside area of the main terminal building is divided into three distinct ticket counter areas: the American Airlines area, the Continental Airlines and Delta Airlines area, and a large counter area coontaning all the other airlines. The American Airlines area is nearest to concourses D and E, the Continental and Delta area is nearest to concourse C and the remaining area is nearest to concouse B.

Airport Expansion

As of 2008, the airport has been receiving major upgrades, including a new Terminal (Concourse A), pavement reconstructions and expansions, new light systems, press conference rooms, and new fast food franchises along its corridors. Over $400 million will be used to expand the airport facilities through 2011. The new concourse is expected to open on June 2010.

Master Plan of the airport
Runway 10-28 proyects completed, Runway 8-26 Safety Area Extension currently in progress, and Terminal A almost completed.

Can be seen the progress of the Safety Area Extension of Runway 8-26 (North Runway)

LMM airport terminal unveiled
Terminal A will start operating in April of next year.

The construction of the attractive and modern Terminal A at the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in Isla Verde (San Juan) is completed by 90%, which is estimated to start operations in April 2009.

Yesterday, the secretary of state and executive director of the Port Authority, Fernando Bonilla, undertook a tour to inspect the construction work of this structure, which entails an investment amounting to $ 107 million and is part of the plan of expansion of this airport facility .

The new terminal is designed to meet passengers related to the District's Convention Center and cruises. It is a structure of 226,000 square feet, with a mezzanine and seven gates that will be served by Delta Airlines and U.S. Airways, airlines which currently operate in Terminal B.

In fact, these airlines yesterday signed the lease agreement for this facility. U.S. Airways, which operates in Puerto Rico since 1989, serves 42 weekly flights from San Juan to Charlotte, Philadelphia and Boston. In December increased to 52 weekly flights as part of the season.

Delta, meanwhile, offers 28 weekly direct flights to the cities of Atlanta and New York. As of Nov. 22, will increase the frequency to 38 flights per week.

"The airport has received over the past three years the largest investment in its history with more than $ 400 million in new infrastructure and improvements. Terminal A is an example of that investment, needed to extend indefinitely the life of this airport and giving a first-class service to over 10 million passengers that annually pass through the same", he said.

One of the particularities of this terminal, apart from the impressive design, is the use of advanced technology in security systems of cameras and sensors. In addition, the baggage handling system will be unique in the Caribbean, as it will classify and distribute it to all airlines at the airport.

In the U.S. there are very few of these, according to Bonilla, because they are only in first class airports with great movement of passengers.

Terminal A also has 20,000 square feet for the operation of several businesses, including McDonald's, The Coffee Beanery, Quiznos Subs, Green Planet and Dufry Duty Free Shops.

The airport now will have a total of five concourses.

Well alexis91 thank's a lot for all that information relating to the new airport expansion and everything else. At least we have a international airport with proyects to make it better. Because their are other countries that wish to have something like this one . Let's see what other proyects they propose for this airport later on.

That is an interesting runway configuration. I wonder how it affects simultaneous landings and take offs. I guess the pilot has to bank at the last minute for landings and almost immediately for take offs.

@ FM 2258:

Yeah, I think that there are not simultaneous landings and takeoffs because of the runways configuration.

@ Jaykar:

Thanks. Only representing PR...

Humongous terminal, albeit not so pretty on the outside. The interior is far better.

Yeah, the airport old terminal (mostly outside) is a bit outdated, it should be renovated completely, to match best with the new modern terminal.

that would be so nice if they re-did the entire outside of the building to match the new terminal.. maybe that is a long time goal of theirs...
