American Airlines adding P.R. flights
By CB Online Staff

American Airlines will add flights from San Juan, Puerto Rico this year after slashing its local operations by nearly half in recent years, Gov. Luis Fortuño announced Wednesday.

No jobs were to be added with the new flights.

The addition of four flights in mid November will bring the number of American Airline flights from San Juan to 24 per week. The routes include a daily flight to Dulles International Airport outside Washington D.C. and additional flights to Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles.

The new flights will add 9% to the seating capacity of the current American Airlines service.

“Following a significant reduction on the number of flights to and from the island as a consequence of the adverse factors hitting the industry, the tourism sector in Puerto Rico is once again gaining strength, Fortuño said during a press conference alongside American Airlines officials.

Before a round of cuts in September, American Airlines offered 38 flights per day from San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Puerto Rico Tourism Co. Executive Director Jaime López said that while American Airlines was not adding jobs the new flights would have a positive impact on the tourism industry by bringing in more passengers who will need more hotel rooms, transportation services, restaurants and other offerings.

Airport shopping center near completion
By : FRANCES RYAN
[email protected]
Edition: June 18, 2009 | Volume: 37 | No: 24

New 20,000-square-foot mall at LMM International Airport to house 22 stores, create 203 new jobs; project part of $14 million development at airport; Ports negotiating with Borders and Farmacias Plaza

Construction of the first shopping center inside the island’s premier airport, Luis Muñoz Marín International (LMM), is nearly completed CARIBBEAN BUSINESS learned. The project, scheduled to finalize construction later this year—with the main goal to be open in time for the 2009 busy fall retail season—already has its first tenants, including Sunny Planet and Medalla Light Store, Ports Authority Executive Director Alvaro Pilar confirmed during an exclusive interview.

The new shopping center will be above the old American Airlines arrivals area in Terminal B and will feature a varied mix of top retailers.

Advanced negotiations are also underway to sign Borders and Farmacias Plaza as part of the first group of tenants at LMM’s new shopping center, which will add 20,298 square feet of new retail space and house approximately 22 stores, Pilar noted. The Ports chief said hundreds of retail proposals were received requesting spaces at the desired airport location. Once operational, the shopping center is expected to generate 203 new direct jobs.

As first reported, (CB Dec. 14, 2006), the LMM shopping center is part of a $14 million development project that will add 100,000 square feet of new retail space throughout the island’s busiest airport. The new shopping center will be open to both passengers and the visiting public with access from inside the gates and from the airport’s parking lot. The remaining 80,000 square feet of new space will be used to reinstate much-needed lobby area that was taken by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) when the new federally mandated security scanners were installed seven years ago.

“We are very excited about this project, which will help our efforts to diversify the mix of products and services we offer the estimated 10 million passengers who visit the airport on an annual basis,” Pilar said. “The main goal of the marketing office at the Ports Authority has been to look at LMM airport, as well as all our port facilities, as integral pieces in the island’s economic development. In this case, we have an extraordinary captive audience and people traffic that can be maximized in many ways. Also, we remain current with airport industry trends to attract and retain new retail concepts and restaurants that are up to par with those in the largest airports in the U.S.”

Contrary to typical shopping centers, the airport’s new retail operation isn’t expected to bill CAM (common area maintenance) charges, which tend to drive up leasing costs. Airport retailers or concessionaires negotiate on a monthly rental basis because common area maintenance is already a part of the airport operation. With only a fraction of the space of Plaza Las Américas’ more than two million square feet, the new airport shopping center will get a strong start with 10 million-plus passengers a year or about a quarter of Plaza Las Américas’ annual foot traffic.
